I just asked a group of people "so what do all yall do?" they said game design, then i went on and talked about how i think the game industry is slaving all their employees.
oh how people love me at parties.
i'm drunk.
Pan Out!- ahahah!ohhhhhsnap
- I'm pretty sure I've said this same thing thing to game devs =D "it's just the industry, man"monNom
- My neighbour's kid works for EA. I talked to him about that. He seemed concerned. Seems the son never mentions that stuff. Oops.ETM
- sort of thing. Likely so dad isn;t always asking. Oops.ETM

- that's awful when that happens. I try to fake one by just holding a couple of fingers out.mikotondria3

"It's not what, it's who"
It's a lazy question. The garbageman, janitor, whathaveyou, could be the most exciting person you'd ever meet. Don't spoil it by asking something stupid like how he/she makes a living.
If someone likes what they "do" I'm sure it'd be shared naturally anyways.

really? damn... i'm usually the one asking people that... To me what a person does says a lot about that person and what that person knows.
- the thing that has them procrastinating may say more.ohhhhhsnap

Been on vacation since March 8th. Hoping to be working again soon.

i always assume that if you don't answer the question with a direct answer you're unemployed
- cannonball19780
I assume they are interested and I tell them my job. If they think it's boring then that's their problem. I don't try to lie creatively to people who express a genuine interest.

i'm just not one to think what you do professionally is who you are. like, i know plenty of people who work as graphic designers, but hardly any are what i'd consider similar. it's such a reverse-stereotype sort of question in a way.
i guess it goes back to that idea made famous in 'high fidelity', as to whether or not it's what you like / listen to that matters. i never much agreed to it.

scarabin... i no longer ask either, seems dry. I wanna know about the things you spend your time listening to and reading-- i can start any discussion about that.
- ohhhhhsnap0
How do you spend your time procrastinating? <<

You guys might hate me at a party then...
well when i asked that or being ask that question at a party, i expect the other person to answer anything they want. Doesn't have to be the thing you make money from.
I've met a guy who said he's an anarchist. lol

yeah kind of a shitty question, I prefer to ask,
"so what do you do...for fun?"much more interesting.
- pango0
^ really? everyone think so?
damn i've been doing it wrong all this time...
:( i'm pretty genuine when i asks that tho.- if you're genuine, s' all that matters. people will sense that.ohhhhhsnap

Here is the problem.
When someone asks me what I do for a living it usually ends up with them asking me to make their website or help them design something stupid.
I like collaborating with people. But after a few terrible experiences I've learned to be very selective about who I work with.
There are alot of people who only care what people can do for them. I'd rather get to know the person first. And if we share a common passion or goal help then we can work together.
Asking someone what they do for a living without knowing them first is like going up to a girl and asking them if they want to fuck.
- lol great points. especially the last one._niko
- then what's it like to go up to a girl and ask her what she does for a living?albums
- you consider them equal? i'd like to know how you communicate in general.albums
- I consider everyone equal until they ask me something lame like what do you do. Im at a party to have fun man.err
- do you ask "when is the drop?"pango
- What if someone is a genius scientist and doesn't fuck a fuck about design? do you share a common passion?fredddddd
