open AI10 files in CS

I have already read on several forums but no solution... I can not open older AI files (probably AI10) in AI CS6. Also placing them does not work -
error message: 'unknown format'help ! please !

have you tried to open it with a older version of AI?
try renaming the file .EPS or .PDF, it sometimes work

unfortunately I do not have access to an older version...
renaming does not do the trick either:-(

If you have it, try opening the .ai file in Acrobat Pro. Save it down as a PDF and then Illustrator will be able to open the file.

Just realized, other files like TIF and PSD also would not open. Everything is on an external HD... damn
- Try moving the file to desktop, then try to open it. Your external HD might be fucked.Continuity
- just verified the HD, seems to be ok, more recent files from the HD open without problemsd_gitale

file permission issues perhaps?

Could be that the files were corrupted when copied to the external HD, or a bad sector has developed on the HD since then.
You shouldn't have a problem opening Illy 10 files in CS6

If you are on mac a quick 'n dirty workaround could be to try open the file in preview and save as PDF and then open in AI. But if the files are corrupted as mentioned above this probably wount work either.

yeah seems the files are corrupted, even though the HD itself is absolutely fine....
