Woah... I had no idea you could do add multiple strokes to 1 object like that. Amazing.

Wasn't the Characters sub-object introduced in CS4 or something, could be why people never encountered it before.

Dudes, you can add extra fills to text, then apply effects like "Convert to Rectangle" or whatever, to make live buttons.
Can have gradients, rounded corners, stroke, whatever.
And it'll adjust size based on text length :)- That's ONE object. Bam
Juddly - How you do this again? I type text, add new fill, convert to rectangle, and type disappears. What's the step by step?********

You have to drag the new fill under the characters layer within the appearance panel.
