^ There's nothing stopping the government...or cable company...from doing that now.

This is more about access and making internet universally available with no interruptions. It could enable some pretty cool technologies

How much money has google spent doing this?

As someone that stopped using cable for TV, I am all for this. I would be concerned, however, with big brother.

Mexico has had free public wifi for a couple years now.
But you cant get signal unless your standing on the roof of a large skyscraper which Mexico doesn't even have yet.but seriously, some parts of Mexico has had free public wifi for a couple years now.

Think, if the US gov. did this they would crush the private ISP industry or force them into providing premium services to businesses and whoever could afford it. This would not allow for them to hogtie the middle class with paid services and Wall Street would would revolt.

Just because it's free and public doesn't mean you have to use it, particularly if you're concerned privacy is the trade-off for free.

it'll be nice to watch our current list of network providers come out from behind their fixed prices to offer people a normal price to have a phone. Nowadays these guys just charge us whatever they can get away with. $75-$120/mo is what these kids are paying a month to have a smartphone. Which is kinda sad. T-mobile was offering $50/mo to jailbroken iPhones, which is now illegal, up to 5 years in jail?!

How would free wifi give the government any more or less ability to spy on people?
If you are worried about privacy, you should probably not be on the internet in the first place.
