Adobe Illustrator Error

My friend is getting this message on illustrator when trying to open documents and whaver she chooses the file opens black with no text.
This happened in 2 different computers with 2 different versions of illustrator on it with multiple files.
Anyone knows a way around it?

Likely a compression error from emailing or server storage. If possible, get a zip compressed working copy from the original creator next time to prevent any server side compression from corrupting the file.

She says the only way she moves the file from one computer to another is through a thumbdrive, never over email though.

The only thing I could think of is one party is OSX, the other Win. The creator might be saving down to a version or using a different version than your friend. I'm sure at this time the file will not open as a pdf in distiller if the extension is changed, it works sometimes, might as well try, but I doubt it. If you can, open it in a hex editor to see if the headers are even valid anymore.
I would have already told the creator I can't open it and tried a new file.

Looks like it thinks it's just opening a text file rather than an illustrator doc

Check localisation and language settings on the source computer, they must be different than the destination's
