In your opinion, what's the best sans serif for small copy on web? Does Helvetica come on every Mac?
I know Arial is a copy, comes with all computers and it also displays better at small sizes.

IMHO Helvetica looks kind of busted on the web.
It's 2013 - look outside the standard web stack. Typekit has a bunch of lovely sans serifs (Proxima Nova, etc), and Google Fonts even has good ones.
Google Fonts - Roboto, Droid Sans are favorites and are free to use.
- Love Proxima, just disappears into the content, ultra-clear for mid-sized body copy, and too shabby heavier, either.mikotondria3
- *NOT too shabby heavier, sorry.mikotondria3

If it’s ok for you to use Google webfonts have a look at Karla, it has a nice kind of oldschool sans serif quirkyness to it and it really works for small copy
