It'll wig out if you've been using absolute urls for assets.
If you're using relative paths (as you should be) then everything will be fine.I usually just download the whole folder via ftp, then reupload to the new place and amend the wp-config file and your domain settings.

ah so you can hard code the amends in wp-config? what about the database?

Don't forgot to change the site location url. either in the dashboard settings, or in the wp-options table in your database!

This'll be the last time you populate a WP site when it's not in-situ.

Use ManageWP - https://managewp.com
One of the features is migrating sites to new servers.Normally it's only available on the paid Professional or Business plans, but you can use all the features on the free plan for 30 days.

This is a great article on how to do it. I've followed this method a number of times without problems.

Looks a good belt and bracers approach above. Have done this fora few site, sometimes it works easily and sometimes its been a real pain but the above looks to cover most everything.

Import database, open in a code/plain text editor, do a search and replace on the domain, save, export to new host.
You'll be surprised how many absolute links to the domain the database held.

This method saves having to mess around with the database.

You can leave it installed in the subfolder and it gets treated like it's in the root folder. I used it on a site recently and it worked fine. Less of a headache than moving the database around.

Check out http://codex.wordpress.org/Movin…
Specifically, the section titled "When Your Domain Name or URLs Change." This it the approach that I use whenever any part of the URL for my WordPress install changes.
That codex article links to a search & replace script you can run (http://interconnectit.com/produ... which is easy to use and saves a ton of time.
It's simply a matter of:
1.) Uploading and running that script.
2.) Updating your .htaccess file with the new URL
3.) Moving all of your files on the server to the new location. The method mentioned above by shaft will also work, but I prefer this one because it's a more complete and thorough approach.

I have a non-technical designer friend who used backup buddy and was very happy, it was $$ but it just worked.... this was after he spent a lot of time trying other stuff that he couldn't figure out....and kept calling me about how to do system admin stuff he'd never really get except by memorization....
