Well do you have a working browser, you have a problem with Flash.

Alright lets start here. How do I get Snow Leopard? Now keep in mind im not a mac fanboy, in fact I hate macs and only bought this thing to run Logic, so I DO NOT know how to update the OS on this thing, I dont even know where to get an OS from.
- BUY IT. What is it, like $29?monospaced
- Do I have to go to an apple store and actually buy this?CygnusZero4
- Or is this something I buy through itunes?CygnusZero4
- First, you don't buy MAC software on iTunes, you buy songs, movies and iOS appsmonospaced
- Do a google search and buy it from a store, probably not the Apple Storemonospaced

Have you tried my original suggestion of creating a new user?

Buy Snow Leopard

I forgot about Opera. I actually have it, just havent used it much. The fact that noone mentioned it tells me its probably shit? I dont care, if it works Ill use it.
- It was mentioned on the previous page, along with CaminoAmicus

When you install a new OS on a mac, what happens to all of your files that you currently have on the machine?
- Chrome/FF/Safari are the big ones then it's Operaernexbcn
- Just follow the instructions, Apple is super user friendly with this. It will NOT wipe your files.monospaced

@CygnusZero4 it should leave everything as it was but a good rule before installing an OS is make sure you have your shit backed up.
- Yeah its backed up, just have a shit ton of files. Was hoping they would just stay where they are.CygnusZero4

I really still think you need to take a close look at what a "casual user" can do to his computer and OS on a 5 year old computer that has been somewhat ignored over the years. I'd say reinstall or update your OS to clean out the junk and get a cleaner slate. I'm sorry your CD drive is busted, that really sucks, so I don't know how you'll install a new OS without it or an external drive. I do know that, even with an old computer, you can get it back working with a good browser and Flash compatibility. It just takes a little work cleaning up the system (just like on a PC, sometimes) and keeping the machine literally checked up on once in awhile. Also, Apple WILL check out an out-of-warranty machine if you make a good case for it.

The CD isnt 100% broken. Basically if I put the computer to sleep, leave the lid shut, jam a disc in the drive and hold it there, then open the lid and wake the computer up, Ive found that SOMETIMES that will get it to suck the disc in. Thats the only way ive gotten it to work, and its very random. Some days it literally just dont work.

if it was me i'd back all your files up and do a clean install. that way you'll get a fresh system, free of any nasties you may have picked up or caused along the way.

- doesn't work, sorry. well, at least for me.oey

this worked for me

I have other problems with this machine. It will randomly disconnect my magic mouse which drives me insane. Ill be getting really into working on something in Logic, then the connection is lost.
The wifi on this machine is also starting to die. I used to be able to use my laptop out in the living room, pretty far away from my router. Well a few months ago the wifi stopped working out there, and I can only use the laptop when its within sight of the router. The macbook literally needs to be able to see the router for it to connect to it.
- it sounds as though you haven't run any disk utilities for a while. with all the audio work you do you should keep your hd in good nickhans_glib
- hd in good condition. I'll bet half these problems come from a poorly maintained HD.hans_glib
- That, and your random deletions of bits of the System...hans_glib

My Mac from 2007 is capable of booting from USB devices, I always use Disk Utility to restore the OS X install images to a 10GB partition I made in one of my external USB drives and boot from there to install.
I even did that with Mountain Lion, been doing it for years with each release.

Ive been beating the hell out of this thing using Logic on it for years. This isnt a macbook pro. Logic runs pretty good on it, but I do get some ram errors here and there if the part of the song im working on has tons of shit going on.
I really havent kept up with the maintenance, but whats odd about that is I dont have any problems with any actual software, its all this other shit, mouse disconnect, disc drive problems, wifi not working like it used to, tons of browser issues.
- those could well be system software errors, not just hardware problems.hans_glib

Chrome is getting worse on the mac, FF is good for me, perhaps time to give Safari a try?
- monospaced0
Weird, it works perfectly on the Macs we use.
- monospaced0
Also... awkward timeline.
http://www.qbn.com/topics/677081…- Because it stopped on its own for a while, now its doing it again!CygnusZero4
- I timelined you because this post is the answer. http://www.qbn.com/t…monospaced
- CygnusZero40
Yeah I guess I have to bail on it and go to safari. Im running out of options before I put this thing in the oven.
Is it possible to transfer my bookmarks to Safari?
- CygnusZero40
@mono, yes Im aware of that "fix", but it doesnt work. I tried it, problem continued. I also tried other fixes I found on the web, none worked.
- You have so many Mac problems that seem to be out of the norm. What goes on there?monospaced
- This macbook fucking sucks. Thats the problem.CygnusZero4
- Not trying to be a fanboy here, but I love the fact that everything Apple gives me is seamlessmonospaced
- I feel bad that you have that experience.monospaced
- I appreciate that, I just want this piece of shit to work properly.CygnusZero4
- Im not asking for much here. Can I get a fucking browser that works? Apparently not.CygnusZero4
- Yes, you can. I believe you can with a little help and a little work cleaning up your machine.monospaced
