In the USA, can the government or anyone else see how much you have in your bank account at any given time? If they have your checking account / routing number?
I'm not doing anything against the law and don't want to hide anything, but I've filled out forms for health insurance and other things lately, and they've asked about my assets. I wonder if they could tell?
Is a tax audit the only way?

I'm not worried about anything, but I am curious about how private these things really are. Just made me wonder.

It's pretty much safe to assume that if anyone was motivated to look then they've probably got a law enacted that means they can.
It used to be said that people hated America because of our freedoms.
That's not much of a problem anymore.
Everything you own can be accessed and seized, permanently, without any recourse from you, and you yourself can be indefinitely detained with no defence or chance of a trial.

They ask for assets because they want know your liability. This is in conjunction with credit score. When you are providing your assets etc, at the end where you sign notes that you are providing accurate information.
They have the right to confirm this information.
