What does everybody think of the the current state of graphic design in the US?
All I see at the moment is stuff like this:
http://theheadsofstate.com/
Don't get me wrong, its really well done just seems to look like a lot of other stuff.
Who's breaking the mould in the US at the moment?
Avoid the big obvious names, more interested in smaller designers/studios with a v.original style.
Cheers!

I am so sick and embarrassed of the "ironic retro" style of graphic design.

Once in a while i go there http://www.manystuff.org and wonder how they pull it off. I don't know in america but in canada i rarely see this kind of stuff. I would be surprise it only appeal to europeans. I'm not saying it's better or anything but i wouldn't mind a bit more diversity.

The most graphic design jobs are in USA. Smaller countries might put out "better" work, but still they don't put out the volume nor opportunity to work like we do here.
- You're saying
Quantity > Quality ???randommail - quality depends on the market. I'm saying we design more than smaller countries.robotron3k

This wasn't meant to be a big attack on the US.
Just see so much hipsterish retro faded, torn, worn looking stuff that really is boring to me.
I guess its just down to personal taste - I like hard edged minimalist design - i.e. Swiss lol.
The links people are posting are generally what I didn't want to see which says a lot I guess.- So you basically want design firms in the US that look like Swiss firms?aaux

Swiss design is ONLY using Helvetica.
American design is using ALL the other fonts.

I think a good place to start is a Print Magazine Regional Design Annual. That's about the only issue I try to buy anymore. But, the kind of textured, retro style has definitely been very popular in the last few that I've looked at.

Finding a good designer in the US is as difficult as finding a dentist in the UK.
