if you are an audiophile, you know that wireless degrades audio quality regardless of speaker quality.

Yeah and nothing is really going to beat my $1000 headphones. That's not the point of my post however, and I'm not really wanting to spend that kind of money as I will 90% of the time be using said headphones - looking for something passable to use in more social settings and general media consumption. I know bluetooth can have it's issues, but wireless ie. data over a network, is another thing altogether?

zepplin is wireless and sonis.
I got some krk rokit monitors which I use for recording but also sound awesome just playing through itunes.

Jambox looks cool but it's using bluetooth? Airplay will give me lossless audio, then it comes down to how good the speaker(s) are..

As a wannabe audiophile myself, I recommend you invest in a great receiver (stereo or surround) and a set of complimentary speakers first. Then attach an Apple TV.
