Interesting times for Linux (etc) gaming, what with GPU drivers getting sorted out and Steam ready to make a big push.
I just don't see what this wee thing really has to offer proper gaming heads, who likely own computers, 'real' consoles and mobile phones which offer more oomph.

OUYA will get optimized XBMC support... So even without putting a single game on this thing, it will easily have the full functionality of a dedicated home media center for videos / photos / music. Basically a fully open source AppleTV for $99. Sick.
"Maybe it was inevitable. Maybe it was because of the hundreds, if not thousands, of demands on Twitter, in blogs, on Facebook, in Reddit, and in Kickstarter comments. Maybe it's because many of Team OUYA support XBMC, and nearly a third of Team XBMC members are OUYA backers.
Regardless, we are delighted to announce that XBMC will be working with OUYA to ensure that XBMC works well on the OUYA platform. OUYA's Android underpinnings and XBMC's work on Android (soon to be merged into master, pending final sign-offs!) will dramatically speed up that effort, as will early XBMC dev access to OUYA prototypes.
The conversation between our two teams is young, but talk is ongoing and positive. We look forward to providing more exciting news on this front as it develops."

They just passed $7million and have 36 hours to go in the kickstarter.

Ouya Performance Not Particularly Exciting
Results of recent benchmark tests reveal that Ouya is not up to the mark and there are over 70 other ARM devices that perform better than the gaming console. Futuremark, which is known for its benchmarks like 3DMark and PCMark, benchmarked mobile devices and the Tegra 3 powered Ouya has been ranked 73rd.
- Colour me surprised. This whole pitch has had more than a little a feel of novelty bandwagon jumping.detritus

Judging from the comments there, this low ranking isn't surprising or atypical (every console ranks low compared to concurrent configurations of the same parts in PCs), but is misleading (among the Tegra 3 it's ranked highest, the OS is still in beta and will streamline out a lot of chaff that doesn't apply to something not running on batteries, etc).

gotta agree with etm here that this isn't really a push for hardware. the specs were released over a year ago and then too there was controversy over the build. tho i believe the real contribution will be with the open marketplace.

" (every console ranks low compared to concurrent configurations of the same parts in PCs),"
Check the results, this isn't compared to PCs but other ARM devices... as in phones and tablets

As long as the games play well, does it matter how powerful it is? After all, it's only $99 vs the ~$600 for your ARM based mobile device. If it's successful they'll have room to improve for the next version.

^ Yeah and a PS3 is £150 and has way better looking games than a $600 phone/tablet. So where does the Ouya fit in?
- good pointmonospaced
- but I think they subsidize the PS3 and make money from games and licensing?monospaced
- True but that doesn't matter to consumersanimatedgif
- I thought what matters to consumers is that it plays games well... guess I was wrong.monospaced
- I mean customers don't care where the money goes, they care about price and a certain quality of gamesanimatedgif

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a cheap open console to succeed. I just feel this will be underwhelming to the hardcore audience who have bought into it
- Was it supposed to be hardcore? $99 is pretty cheap, imo.monospaced
- Hardcore initially because you'd have to be geeky enough to find the kickstarter in the first placeanimatedgif
- Now you're mixing your meanings of hardcore!monospaced

the indie game scene is blossoming amazingly. the chances of seeing some cool indie dev stuff on here eventually is pretty good.
- mantrakid0
i think Sony and MS have been smart to try and open things up for indie devs a bit on their shits - it's only gonna grow & they may very well have seen what potential the Ouya had.. Dudes like me dont play games for the graphics. If i did all my favorite shit wouldnt look pixellated to hell as a stylistic choice. :D
- animatedgif0
^ Sony are doing that at the moment actually, MS did a fair bit of it over the past few years but managed to piss off every single team they worked with.

Anyone get their Ouya. They really shit the bed IMO.... :\ sad that i need to retract all my excitement.

I was wondering about this the other day. I'm sure there are youtube video reviews by now.
