OK so maybe it's the wrong thing to do, but why would anyone think they would be able to tie you to your friend, much less prove you learned about the company from him/her? Seems like quite a stretch

morality is an invention.
we're all trapped - in one way or another - in a position of immorality. the system itself is immoral. Does the guy who automates a process of development not get paid for the entirety of the job? Does the guy who take on a job, hires someone else to do it for 50% of what he's paid and then profits for sending a few emails back and forth? Or maybe it's immoral for businesses like Pepsi and Coke to move agencies because of pre-existing relationships that, in the end, destroy jobs, uproot families and cut the advertising budget so that the people at the new place are only getting 3/4's the money of the old place.
Fuck morality - buy the .com and cut your friend in on the profit.
