I have a friend who is freelancing for a big client that is launching a new sub-company.
I just looked up the "newcompanyname".com, and it turns out it hasn't been registered yet.
I have no association with the project. Would it be illegal, stupid, or unethical to buy that url?
Anyone ever done something like that?

do unto others...

lol, it would be pretty asshole-ish.

if i understand your position correctly, you'd be fucking your friend as much as anyone

could potentially look very bad for your friend should the company find out... sounds very "scammish".

Surely you can't disconnect from the fact you're potentially messing with your friend's current livelihood...
Regardless, a cybersquatter is a bit of a wanker IMHO, in other words, some bandit is sitting on a domain I want!

True, he could get fired if his boss ever found out.

tell this to a friend your friend doesn't know and share the money ..

Why would you do this? Has he or the other company fucked you over in the past?

When they notice the registration date of the domain they will know someone involved in the idea/dev process bought it.

is it a new financial organisation that helps millionaires avoid tax?

Ask your friend if its ok.
And think about the ethical values of the company. Then do it.

yeah thats a dick move.

Apply yourself and you'll feel better about earning your money with hard work.

If the clients are rich 1% republicans, then yes, they can afford it, and you should profit handsomely, and if your friend gets fired, he probably hated them anyway...
If the clients are a cool nonprofit and/or somebody who's not too evil, then register it, and just ask your friend's cool boss to buy you a beer sometime for saving his ass....

Haha, is it a tobacco, BP, or cancer causing product related company? If so than you know my stance on it. And if your just trying to be a dick honestly the registration time will be showcased if anyone takes two seconds to find out when it was registered. And if it is discovered and it costs the team X number of dollars to change the name a tiny bit than their going know someone is screwing with them, but if it is an agency this sort of thing can mean more money for the agency if the domain was supposed to have been registered by the company.
