Hey guys.
Got a colleague who keeps all the colours in indesign as RGB then when sending it to print just lets the PDF convert them to CMYK. Are there any negatives to doing this? Apart from it seeming a little lazy?
Cheers

you cant view/adjust the converted colors before having them in your pdf thats the negative

- As in, you are looking at rgb so the colour may shift when you convert to PDF? Then you can't adjust in the PDF?

Teach him. Could be that he just doesn't know.

One negative is that some RGB colors will shift wildly when converted to CMYK.
- +1, thisd_rek
- yes, any RGB color outside the CYMK gamut will be pulled inmonospaced

As Mr_Right mentioned the color shifts could be quite varied.
However, advancements in digital and offset printing have given some printers the ability to introduce an "expanded gamut" into a traditional 4-color process. Since an RGB color gamut is wider than traditional CMYK, some printers can get closer to the RGB values than previously possible.
I work with a printer in Detroit, MI that has this capability and have sent many jobs to them RGB. Most of the jobs have come out wonderful.
As with any print job, proof, proof again, and then proof some more!
- how do they expand the gamut of CMYK without new colors?monospaced
- More sophisticated RIP.tesmith
- that means nothing... HOW do they expand CMYK without adding colors?monospaced
- Problem is, it's 4 colors, so "expanding" them is impossible without adding to themmonospaced
- Same 4 colors we've been using for over a century, still ink on paper, same limitationsmonospaced
- The RIP converts RGB to CMYK better than Adobe?tesmith

Perfect, thanks guys.

Because of muddy colors and shitty blacks, I spent the last 2 hours reading about sRGB, Adobe RGB, CMYK...
Convert RGB to CMYK...
Working in RGB instead of CMYK...
I tried so many things...
Best result so far:Photoshop (RGB) > Indesign > Export to PDF
Also, I think users should really use the search in public voice or like someone suggested last week, type qbn and whatever you-re looking for in google search.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it has been very useful.
Have a great week!

Make absolute sense to work in rgb into indesign, if you don't kwno your printing profile.
