just some quick, possibly worthless, advice about wp themes...
the thing is, while (even good) themes are nice quick fix, they often go a little overboard with the fancy features, seemingly for the sake of wowing potential theme purchasers. just be careful of buying into that sexy jquery magic dipped theme because you are committing to someone else's code, architecture, decisions, etc.
the prob? big-ish wordpress updates often break themes. sometimes in big ways, sometimes in small annoying ways. and if the theme is not of your design then you might be screwed until the theme vendor issues an update, etc.
if you can, learn how to create your own. start with a simple boilerplate like starkers and make it yours. add only what you need, nothing more. keep it simple. determine your own responsive breakpoints. make it a tailored fit.
if you can do this, then when trouble pops up, it's likes totes easier to diagnose the probs and just fix'em, fast. i've always liked running into probs because it has forced me to problem solve under pressure and i always win. and by win, i mean learn.
stay sharp nerds. luv, prophetone.

Understanding the codex template tags and function references are the first steps to building a wordpress theme. If you can code a static site framework, that site's architecture can be made into a theme to work with wordpress fairly effortlessly.

- sure :) the template tags are easy to start working with, the function references can get more involved quicklyalbums

I've been getting into building a theme a bit, sort of evolving from serious customizations to figuring out how to start from scratch with bootstrap. It's fun!

No time to do a proper portfolio, so I'm doing a quick wordpress site. Here are some themes so far I've found.

Gotta be honest, I've only scratched the surface of what I want to learn and make, but after using Kalium for several years on most of my sites, I am slowly moving to Oxygen Builder + OxyExtras to allow far more customization potential.
At my agency, I'm getting IT team to set up a WP environment with all the things below so I can start prototyping more complex things with it.

We (previous company) used this for a lot of sites. I liked it as a designer as had lots of variants/layouts/elements to create bespoke pages. Front end devs seemed to find it decent for tweaking too.
Layouts are responsive and seem to collapse well.
