Anyone have experience with this? About to start designing a book for a family member. Neither of us have really worked in this realm before. Should I just do the layout in InDesign? Ideally this will be printed and sold, but we'll also probably want it available on Kindle/iPad. We're probably going to do this sans publisher...are Blurb or Lala or any of those sites any good?
Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I love blurb, I've done photo books, text books, paperback & hardcover. The quality is equal to a bookstore book.

blurb isn't bad. my last book i got printed at edition one books in berkeley, amazing photo quality there, but a bit pricier than blurb (and you have to pay for a run instead of paying by the copy, but you can do a run of 5).

i've had identical blurb and lulu books printed and have been sitting along side each other for the last 4+ years on the bookshelf.
the lulu one has held up well, the blurb one has warped a bit and the pages have gone wavy.
also, i've gone thru a publisher with a recent one, and sold a lot more. more money up front, but the single book cost is far lower compared to blurb/lulu.

This seems to be the closest thread for my issue when i *filter* the PVN.
I am pulling my hair out right now transitioning from raw manuscript(done in scrivener), to the output(compile) formats(available options a plenty none seem to work to keep formatting in tact), and then bringing that into Indesign to create proper print/ebook ready format.
In Scrivener/.doc format it is a 52 page document with graphics inline. It is a scientific publication with image references and i am having the worst luck getting all 52 pages to "Place" into the indesign document im trying to create.
Researched i thought what the solution would be which was Placing the document in while holding shift so it would auto fill the number of pages i created the .indb with to match the .docx/.doc(havent had any luck outputting it in any different "version"). It stops auto filling the InDesign document at page 20. No idea what is going on and im praying to the print people here to save my soul. I thought the InDesign part was going to be the part of this project i actually was going to enjoy, so far it's utter hell.

is it a photo book or a novel?

how many copies are you planning to print?

It is a "Scientific" Work. Non-Fiction. 20+ years of research on a subject that over the last month i have seen cut in half. It is now a nice succinct 52 pages with graphics inline.
Not sure how many copies will be run. Right now im in formatting hell. The printing/distribution is the next hurdle. It will be released in e-book format first.

If you want it available online without the hassle of lots of expenditure, storage, distro etc just use lulu. Quality is 'ok' / standard. Blurb is more expensive, shipping prices are CRAZY. Blurb is better for one off wedding books etc.

I found blurb to be worth what I ordered / received.
