Adam Gopnik explains the Golden Forty Year Rule and posits that forty-something pop culture gatekeepers (which he calls the suits) idealize and are fascinated by the time their parents were young and in love (fortyish years ago).

I read that last week and, whilst I thought it somewhat interesting, couldn't help but notice the cherry-picked support (Arctic Monkeys were what now? Not in any way wholly representative of the era they found themselves in - I was there) and the fact it assiduously ignores the other 'decennial itches'.
As best as I can tell, elements of every decade from the last century seems to be represented in culture right now.

lol detritus @ telescopic view of The New Yorker's Ivory tower. Good points. I thought the same thing: who the hell are the Arctic Monkeys? Couldn't think of a single song or lyric or anything. They certainly ain't the Beatle of the 90s.
