I got broken into last year. Stole PowerBook, harddrives, Canon DSLR and other bits and pieces. Now when I leave the house I lock everything up.
The only thing worse than coming home to house that's been broken into is the paranoia that comes with thinking it will happen again.
My advice, scan / photograph your items and receipts and upload them offsite. Helps with insurance claim.
Condolences on your losses.
- No insurance... Not that much Cash value taken anyway.orrinward2
- I'd say less than £700 worth. Probably less than £500. Just the data and that horrible violated feeling.orrinward2

wait orrinward, you have dropbox on it? if you contact the police and have them contact dropbox, they might be able to trace the ip next time the computer is turned on and dropbox connects. you have a chance of recovering it!
- IP only gives broad area though. Not exact location.orrinward2
- My area is a rough area of London and it'll either be shipped off to East Europe/Africa in bulk or...orrinward2
- ...in a pawn shop amongst all the other stolen shit within a few days.orrinward2

can't tell ya how many times i've been burgled. shittiest, most violated feeling every time. like your home is no longer yours...
sux losing your backups man, my condolences!
- orrinward20
@goldie Same really. They just had to find all my backup drives too. As I do the odd bit of laptop work and buy/sell I have loads of them. They took 4 (3 of which were heavily customised with both hardware and software) and left 7 that were just not in plain sight in my at-home office.
The one drawer they took things from is where I keep my backups that aren't in plain sight. It's my girlfriend's laptop that pisses me off the most as that had all our pictures and our 'Home Movies' on. If anything I hope they leak so we can at least get them back!

That's shit dude. Happened to me, I couldn't care for the hardware, it's just all the work and personal stuff, that they'll just wipe, is what pissed me off.

Any laptop donations are welcome? If anyone's generous I'd also take a nice DSLR. Never had one but I'll milk the sympathy for all it's worth!

Sorry to hear orrinward, be glad that they did not steal your lil' dog...

... And my awesome XBMC setup with Sickbeard, Headphones, CouchPotato and DropBox watched NZB folder so I can make my home machine download things when I add things on the train or at work...

That sucks...house broken into?
- Yeah. Well house walked into when back door left open - Only had a ten minute window too...orrinward2
- Missus left the house, and realised when she got to the main road (<10 mins) that she'd left the door unlocked. Came back and everything had gone.orrinward2
- Must have staked out the place in advance...ukit2
- back and everything had gone. Fucking crazy!orrinward2

...Coz my 'please send me condolences' thread needs to be an 'of the day' type.
Got burgled today.
4 laptops
3TB of external hard drives (ALL MY BACKUPS)
1 iPod
1 Traumatised little dog who was shoved in the basement during the break in...Nothing too valuable but my girlfriend's wonderful little superspecced Hackintosh laptop got taken... And whoever has it now does not know how awesome it is. OC'ed C2Duo to 3.1GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB Internal Storage with an 80GB SSD for OSX and it'll be pawned for like £100 because it's a not-new Dell on the outside!
