A client wants to do a run of 300 promo cards.
My go to printer usually says 500 minimum, so my client suggested Vistaprint.
Does Vistaprint ever produce quality results?
Can you do Pantone and choose paper?

Like everything else, you get what you pay for ...

i suppose it depends on what your client considers quality. but i've heard mixed reviews about vp. i would half expect reslts that are ok but not fantastic.

That's what I thought.

From what I've seen VistaPrint tends to use the shittest, thinnest stocks, so no matter how the good the printing is it will look and fell cheap and nasty.

Your paper selection is Glossy / Matte and 3 or four weights.
Four color process - no matching (that i'm aware of)

I would price it out on vista print (the have job calculators) and gather the cost for 300 cards. Then get the price from your printer for 500. Request a sample from each if you can that is close to what you want - and then present the client with the facts about what they are purchasing.

I am ashamed to say that I am impressed with a few items VistaPrint has done lately. I find anything done in a matte with them, even the signature series sucks. I hate the stock and there is often a weird odor.
However, the signature gloss is actually decent. I've done marketing folders and cards for a client through VistaPrint, at their request, and it was pretty good. What would have cost $1200 local I got for $233 with a flash sale.
Problem is, glossy materials are less desirable than matte in many circumstances.

I just ordered some new business cards from a colleague from Vistaprint, and I've got to say, they came out pretty nice. Matte finish, decent card stock, colors looked good.

- I think that's what it was. They just came today. Plus RetailMeNot.com always has coupons to save like 30-50%.elahon

Can't speak for VistaPrint, but I recently had to use OvernightPrints.com and their matte printing looks pretty damn good. No weird ink bleeding, vivid colors, overall impressed for the price.
I will say though that every now and then something isn't QC'd and ends up getting cropped wrong or misaligned. They've always corrected their mistake, it just takes a few extra days.
But for the price you could do much worse.

I did my wedding invites though them... from a pure quality perspective, they're shit. Their 'premium 100lb' stock is still flimsy, the colour fidelity and registration/triming not great.. but I think I spent $43 for 50 4x6 cards + custom envelopes. So value for the money that's pretty hard to beat.
- in short, you get something for cheaper than anyone else could do it, even if it's not great.monNom

If you go on the VistaPrint website and read the reviews, you would see that their quality is hit or miss.
On the plus side, they seem to give quick refunds or credit to unsatisfied customers.

They were horrible many years ago but they are decent now.

Murder your client in the face for even suggesting such heresy! ...or use VP and accept the money, giving them a result that's still good enough for anyone except designers.
