Anyone expecting an actual TV is a moron.
Why would Apple get into an expensive market that makes barely any money and the general public only upgrade every 10 to 15 years.

- TV Upgrades are becoming more frequent. Knock on effect of the contract/upgrade culture.orrinward2

xBox really does trump the Apple TV in all but a few areas. Price, form factor and integration with iDevices are the areas where it's lacking.
Balls to an actual television. Apple should acquire onLive - open the Apple TV up to developers so they can make apps for it and it would be all over save for sports.
- If local games weren't blacked out for MLB at bat Comcast would be getting the boot.jtb26

I just want to be able to play my itunes library/playlists with ease from a computer, phone, whatever... I've tried using the ps3 as a media centre and it sucks for that...
- prophetone0
price and integration across devices is the advantage imo. i have a ps3 serving my needs but would otherwise have an apple tv in my particular case.

I know the interface is simple and all, but can't see the advantage of apple TV over say an Xbox 360. Both can media (Xbox actually is better filetype wise iirc). You can get Netflix on Xbox too, plus you get an Xbox. For the same price.
integrating into an apple home and syncing with apple devices is an obvious advantage if you own lots of apple stuff. But other than that isn't it just like a media box? Like the western digital HD boxes.
- I suppose you get iplayer and YouTube etc. Not sure if Xbox has them...Hombre_Lobo
- without the hard drive storage. remember the appleTV is no longer a hard drive.lvl_13
- Have you HEARD an Xbox? Sounds like a fucking vacuum cleaner, and it has this fugly light on it. Fuck that shit.monospaced

If it's jailbbroken, can you still update it with latest apple stuff?
- seeessess0
@busterboy, I play all my movies (of different formats) from my NAS direct to apple tv. It's jailbroken though, with XBMC installed. Works a charm!
- Yeh sessess! So gay that apple don't allow all filetypes, feels so 90's. Jailbreak for sho. Then its all good! :)Hombre_Lobo

So you can't play on AVPlayer and replicate on the AppleTV? The conversion is a pain in the ass...
- Considering all the movie pirates are switching to h264, I don't think conversion will be an issue much longerNathan_Adams
- monospaced0
^ yes, you just convert them to .mp4 files and import into iTunes.
- BusterBoy0
Is it possible to play movies not downloaded through iTunes on the AppleTV?
- it will be when they initiate screen share/mirroringlvl_13

@mono. nah dude, i should have been more clear. airplay, yeah for a while you have been able to do that. i'm talking about mirroring your macbook screen.

I don't know anyone with Apple TV and I've never heard anyone talk about it. What's the deal?

yes and no. i use it for netflix, and sometimes radio. now i will use it to airplay from my macbook. been waiting for that feature for a while (and that isn't even a feature for apple tv, but in the new OS).
- @mg33lvl_13
- you can use AirPlay from your MacBook and have been able to for at least a year or so.monospaced

I love my AppleTV. It's on many hours a day to stream music from iTunes and Spotify, to access music, to watch movies I've downloaded and purchased, and to rent new releases. When someone comes over with an iOS device, they can stream any of their content as well (this is great for gatherings and parties). I agree with jfletcher, for $99 it's really a great deal, and it's damn simple.
- mg330
How many of you have replaced your cable service with an Apple TV?
Aside from the streaming capabilities from other Apple devices, it's just a glorified Pay Per View box, right?
