Time probably isn't the key factor, but is useful as a starting point. Assume that the logo you'll create will be the best they could get in terms of adding value to their company, charge accordingly and then dedicate however many hours you think are reasonable for that at your illustrator's rate?

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the responses, but assumed logos carried more weight than regular illustrations.
How long will it take? I would assume these things weren't decided by time but rather the value to the client.

sell them a license to use it per item printed on it. 2cents per print or something....you could get lucky and otherwise you will not lose much.

What is the value of a good identity to this company?
ie. what will the extra credibility of a better logo do for their business?

just the logo?
never, never less than 200€.
and thats a bargain...
and dbloc's questions are very important, not the only questions you'll have to make but it's basics.

I'd just price it the same way you would your illustration work. You know the value of your time / skills.
Just take into account the usual stuff - the time it will take, size of client, it's value to them, how and where they'd use it.

I've received a request for an illustrated logo similar to this image:
While this prospective client is calling this an illustration, I think it's falling under the definition of a logo. I don't normally do logos and am not familiar with their pricing. He's describing it as his "site brand, with additional usage in banner, merchandise, T-shirts, etc."
What would be a good ballpark to start with?
