A friend who runs a non-proft asked me to do a new logo for them. Just a logo.
When I offered to do it for free, he said he wants to pay me and they have some good financial backing.
How would you charge? $50, $500, $1000?

Ask your friend his budget... maybe you can get paid, but thrown in some extra collateral and you'll both be happy with the arrangement.

i agree with Amicus. If he insists on paying ask him his preferred budget. This way you know what you are dealing with and he gets a to pay within the non-profits budget. Then if you want to toss a little extra work his way, such as cards or something you can do that to make it feel like you did good.

Ask him how much he had in mind. Do you want to do this to help or make money? If you want to support the non-profit's cause, designing a logo for them non-profit is a great way of doing that. If he really wants to compensate you, he probably has some idea how much already.
- I just realized I said the same thing capn_ron and Amicus already said. Good advice up there.monospaced

Just because they are not for profit, doesn't mean they haven't got money. It just means they aren't operating to make profit - and when they do, they'll put it back into whatever they are doing.
Work out the size of the organisation, find out what their budget is like, charge an appropriate and fair rate without ripping yourself off - pay your bills first, be a samaritan later.

^ tOki's advice is good. I'm designing a logo for a non-profit right now and am charging them $6500. Many of the non-profits that I work for have more money than my for-profit clients.
