Living in San Francisco

I tried to do a search via the filter but was unable to find anything. The low down: I'm moving to San Fran for a job and was curious what are the best places to live. I'll probably be doing the roommate thing for a bit to save money and I will be working in the SoMa area. I also have a dog so being close to a park would be ideal. I've been using pad mapper but not very many housing opportunities have popped up recently. Any other services to use as well?

people will say the tenderloin as a joke, but i've lived here for a couple years and dig it. you have to be down with despair though.

welcome mightyj!
I would suggest grabbing a month-long place from airbnb, and then just plan on looking any available moment you can by checking craigslist/padmapper/etc.
That's what we did, and it worked out. it's pretty competitive as far as renting, so make sure you have all your paperwork in-line.
paperwork you will need:
• CA rental contract (you can get it off the .gov site i believe, or email me and i'll shoot it to you)
• Credit score that has been done in the last week (or so). better to get all three scores and use the best one
• Bank statement showing savings/checking balances
• Offer letter from your new job (congrats by the way)
• any sort of letter of recommendation from previous landlords would be a bonusit's going to be a little more difficult to find a place with a dog, but it's doable. almost every fucking person out here has a dog haha.
I would suggest looking in the Mission hood near the 24th street Bart if you are looking for a lower rent place, but still has tons of good stuff around. Right now we are just of Harrison, and it's a little sketch any farther past both towards potrero and towards the 16th street Bart.
How much are you looking to spend for rent? and i actually know one person that may be looking for a roomate. he also just moved out here.

Having lived there many years myself, I would recommend the Inner Sunset. Waaaay better chance of finding a place where you can have a dog, and it's removed from the craziness that is downtown (including SoMa). Transportation is available via rail and bus, and if you're hip I hear the bike ride is the tits. There are neighborhoods and quick access to the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Cheers.

The best part about Frisko is Santa Cruz.
- Locals know best: only tourists call it 'Frisco'********
- I was a tourist in Frisko for 2.5 years. Had enough of the rave scene, the're are lot's of 40 & 50 year old DJs there now....robotron3k

padmapper.com - cause looking for a apt. via a map, make sense.

i get why people who have lived in SF for a while say Oakland as an alternative, but most people moving to San Francisco want to live IN San Francisco. telling new transplants to look for a place in Oakland is like telling a transplant moving to NYC to scope out Jersey City.
Not the same by any stretch of the imagination.

All the cool kids are moving to Oakland. If you can live in a house with a yard vs. a studio - it starts to make sense. Took me 10 years to figure it out though.

in favor of Oakland, the warehouses are being used to grow excellent pot

Thanks for the info everyone. This is helping out a bit. I have been using padmapper though having a dog has cleared out about 80 percent of the available rentals. I may just go up there this weekend or next and drive around in a few areas calling "for rent" signs. I have a feeing there may be a lot of places not listed since the rental market is pretty competitive. I also found this neighborhood guide while searching and it seems to be helpful: http://www.friendlyneighborhoodg…

oh and an important side note: if you own a car, consider selling it before you make the move to SF. public transport and the likes of zipcar/relayrides really make it pretty easy to escape the city if need be :D

have fun... and get ready for the infamous san francisco attitude, where random strangers you just met are very, very nice to you, as if they've known you for years then act like they barely know you a few minutes later....
I never could figure that out.... maybe it was because they were trying to sell me drugs and I didn't pick up on the codewords...
