"I graduated with design from Salford University.. this just goes to show what contempt they have for their own students. Why not run an inhouse competition to design the new logo?"
Client hires designers = "WHY NOT JUST HAVE A COMPETITION!"
Client has competition = "WTF!!! DOWN WITH CROWD SOURCING, PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!"

Salford should just give it up and become a suburb of Manchester.

"£132,000 on a £3.50 Font ? = Waste of Public Money!"
...Private money surely?

So many questions as to what was going through their heads when this happened.
- Have people forgot that Salford isn't Manchester?
- Why are they using colours / fonts similar to some Manchester?
- Why does it even say the word Manchester?
- Why is there no resemblence to the current Salford branding / colours to possibly reinforce that brand? Is the Fuscia so hard to forget?Totally agree with animatedgif.
What a way to show complete disrespect and lack of faith in their own staff / student's abilities by outsourcing it.

Well you can understand why they put Manchester in there. Most potential students from outside the north west wouldn't know where Salford is and certainly wouldn't know it's as close to the City Centre as Manchester University.
I agree it's controversial, but I reckon it will lead to more admission applications.

What's the problem? It's a big rebranding job, so the University paid big money to get a big agency to do it properly (or not, depending on your point of view). Why would they let students do it? I guess it would have made more sense to hire a local agency though.
And Salford is in, and a borough of, Greater Manchester. Makes sense to reference it, no?

a lot of money. but still amazes me that people on here don't realise that money paid for more than just a logo.
- so you can justify 132k on this branding project ?liveforever

Seems to me they should have hired a designer who graduated from their design course. That would have been good PR spin.
I'm kinda cringing looking at the logo. It's not good.

Without knowing the brief, the working conditions and internal politics as well as any negotiable elements, it's tricky to say if it's worth it. How much would you charge? Are you jealous you didn't this much for a similar job? How much did Tony Blair pay for his brand identity? How much is Nike's swoosh now worth? What price would you put on a photograph or a line of copy?

yeah, but we got a REALLY BIG TIFF FILE. so it was worth it. ;-)
