Yesterday I went on a mission to start this. First I dusted off the '90s Canon Rebel body to find that the batteries were missing and it needed some TLC. The lens was especially questionable (it must have been bumped while stored the last two decades), so I took a trip to the nearest camera store.
I ended up picking up a new f1.8 prime lens on the cheap along with a role of 200 ISO film and a set of old school batteries. Equipped I headed into Central Park and started shooting. It's weird going back to film. I kept looking for the screen preview, and had to learn to trust my settings and experience again. After a couple of shots (a carriage horse) I realized I had to drop my exposure a stop or so.
A long walk later, and at least three accidental exposures, I finished off half of the 36 exposures on the roll. I should wrap this up in a few days and have it shipped to you soon, hektor911. How are you doing on your end?
- i think i wasted my first frame too, snapped and looked at the back of the camera for a preview.johnny_wobble
- I think I just held the shutter down too long a few times and took more than one shot. We'll see.monospaced
- hahaha, old school is fun! Even the guys at the camera shop were excited to have someone buy film.monospaced

The guy at the camera store said I should not shoot the last shot on the roll because that would start an automatic full rewind. He said to at that point manually rewind (there's a button for that!), but to stop before it goes all the way in. I guess it's tricky?
Please, advice on rewind before I go out and fuck this all up.
- don't worry, you can get it back even if it rewinds. there was a link to a diy retriever.johnny_wobble
- no way I'm spending more money. New batteries, film, and lens already set me back well over $100.monospaced
- not until I develop the filmmonospaced
- DIY, don't gotta buy nothin'

THANKS!monospaced - I was worried about this too, but should be able to hear the film release from the take-up spindle.tymeframe
- Mine let off a loud click, plus the pressure dropped from the winder.tymeframe
- when you were pulling the film out using the tape method?monospaced
- No no, when I was using the manual winder in the camera to wind the film back into the roll.tymeframe

@mono.. if it rewinds all the way, you can take it to a lab and they will pull the tab out for you. well at least the one i go to said they would do it for me. or that do it yourself link that was posted, is pretty cool too.
- I look forward to DIYing itmonospaced
- lol yeahsea_sea

@mono... Just finished doing some tests with an old minolta. Im actutally shooting with 1.8 lens which is great. The test shots look good, since the lens and the camera are pretty pretty old. I will do the final shoot this coming weekend. Thanks for the update.
- pics please!!zoozoo
- it's film zoozoo... we're not done with this yetmonospaced
- Cool, we're both shooting with the same lens and film. WIll be very interesting.monospaced

@ali
finished the roll you sent, got it back from the developer's today, and am in the process of scanning the results!
by the by - my scanner, the epson v600, has a bastard feature where the "registration area" needs to be unobstructed in order to scan. this means that it's IMPOSSIBLE to scan an uncut roll of 35mm film lengthways. sigh... i'm just about to take scissors to the roll ):
- bigtrick0
The first roll of ali vs bigtrick (ali shot first):
- interesting how the frames overlap and the film is loaded upside down. i dig it some interesting things happeningJG_LB
- < cool!
who's camera added all the dirt and dust? lolmonospaced - haha mono that would be my dusty scannerbigtrick
- nice!johnny_wobble

Love the 11-15 section, the face at 18 and 20 where the bridge turns into a chicken. So much randomness!

@hektor911
I'll be sending you my roll in a couple of days.@bigtrick
Why didn't you just scan prints?- ok, after viewing, I understand why you scanned the negatives. cool shit after 11, agreedmonospaced
- I'm heading down to china town to take the last 4 exposures on the 36 roll. How are you doing, hektor?monospaced
- sea_sea0
been through at least 3 old cameras, all broke. now down to the one left. a 4 lens lomo. hope this works dammit. it looks like a friken toy.
i'm actually bummed, i thought my nikon would work but there's some error coming up. boo.

Finished my roll today, now I just need to get the tongue end of the film out of the canister and ship it off. How's the progress on your end, hektor911?
- hektor9110
It's been raining like crazy all week. :-( Just waiting for the sun.
- bigtrick0
is the roll that i posted the only finished one so far? i want to see resultszzzzzz
- johnny_wobble0
just finished my first roll, it'll be on it's way to the cap'n tomorrow.
- bigtrick0
- did you scan this yourself? will a lab leave the roll complete like this? i like how you could crop these out differently.johnny_wobble
- scanned myself, asked the lab to leave the roll uncut. although because i messed up the scanning a bit i had to make one cut near the beginningbigtrick
- ... make one cut near the beginning, which you can see ):bigtrick

is there any issue with sending film in the mail? like it getting x-rayed or anything? I was going to write "photographic film - do not x-ray" on the package, but then thought, that'll get it x-rayed for sure.
- funkage0
Snarl is sending his over to me in some filmsafe package. You might want to talk to him about x-rays spoiling the film and stuff. Even my local post office discouraged me from sending film because the x-rays might damage the film.
But that'll probably add to the charm of the project—I think.
- you think the above exposures were affected by x-rays?monospaced
- Doesn't seem like it, but I'm no pro.funkage

@monospaced
The rain is gone and I started shooting should be finished by the end of the week.- sweet. you should have my roll in a few days. you'll have to get the film tongue out though :(monospaced
- johnny_wobble0
I just read a response to a mail x-ray question similar to mine. The guy broke down the math of how many man-hours it would take to x-ray and look at the results for the amount of packages shipped through UPS, FEDEX and USPS. I'm just gonna ship this shit USPS and figure it's not getting x-rayed.
It'll be on it's way today, cap'n.
