Is it possible to be a younger person in LA and work and live without a car?
Just curious.

Anything is possible, but your life will be incredibly annoying. Buy a cheap car if you can.

Close friend of mine living in LA doing this...went to visit him...not having car there sucks

I have done that for 6 months with a bicycle.
I ended up riding cab. Cabs there suck and expensive. I resorted to illegal car service but it was still expensive.
It would have been much cheaper and more convenient if I had bought a crappy car.

Tried this in 2008. Lasted 6 weeks. The bus system is fucked (many are on loops that don't intersect) and the sprawl in unkind to cabfare. Ended up craiglisting the cheapest car I could find, which I still have and love today.

i live and work in venice and get along fine with a bike + the occasional cab + getting lifts from friends

i have taken the bus like twice from venice to west LA / downtown etc. takes an hour.

I did it.... ended up walking and biking a lot. Walked about 4 miles a day. On days I took classes at GCC I would bike, otherwise it'd be hours a day walking.

some places has better connections then others. it all matters where you live and where you going.
i took the bus a few times to santa monica. takes almost the same time as with the car. well, cause it was rush hour. nothing moves then, anyway.

Short answer is "no", but I could imagine living somewhere, like Santa Monica, and walking/bus/bike. But you'd need to work very close, etc.
I think it sucks either way.
