Well, I started my BJJ training in 2010. I also practice Kali/Escrima since 2001 for more realistic combat situations (weapons, multiple opponents, etc.). First I picked up BJJ just to improve my ground work, but now I am totally hooked and train it exclusively. I plan to compete in our local tournaments beginner division next year, and continue working towards my blue belt.

In situations involving many attackers, i find it practical to first throw myself naked on the floor, and wait for them to come. However, its best to have a right frame of brawn and attitude to make sure they don't think you're gay.

I have a 14 year old girl at my school that will handle Mr. OMG.

Been training for years -mainly for fitness and health reasons, but have had minor competition success - national silver medalist at bluebelt.
BJJ is lifechanging - if you've never done it, you wont understand.

Training for 3 years, it is life changing. It gets a bad rap for being two gay, but all sports are gay.
1.Someone who had a homo-sexual/ uncomfortable experience
as a child/teen and still hasnt dealt with the encounter.(you were molested)2. Someone who is frustrated at the learning curve and think its stupid cause its hard. (You aint bowling turkeys, or shooting 3pts swishers the first day.)
3. The boxer," i'd knock them out." Boxing=good self defense, Jiu-jitsu=better self defense. Boxing+Jiu Jitsu= someone who will never be in trouble.
The workout alone has uber plyometrics, yoga, and mad cardio.
Try some of the stuff,
or check out this documentary about Renzo Gracie
- Renzo 13-7 ufc fighter. Everyone talks a big game but there is someone out there always better._niko
- Not saying that Renzo and the Gracies are not good or even legendary, but they take themeselves too seriously._niko
- The Documentary is interesting. The Gracies have a crazy family lineage. Renzo's dad was a rebel fighter! As far as MMA, it passed him by. The way the sport is now, he does not have the athletic level.Ironmonkey

Been training for four years ( Various other grappling arts for about 8 years ) hope to get my purple belt in the next month or two.
If you're ever in NYC we have a great school. Hit me up.

Bjj is a great sport and an awesome workout. Not as sure about it's real life applications. While you're going for that technical armbar outside the bar, the dudes friend is going to be stomping your face sideways. Also grappling on the sidewalk is a good way to get tetnis and cut to shit.
Def. valid for real life if you crosstrain it with a striking or less limited traditional martial art. It all depends on why you're in it... it's definatley humbling to get tooled by a 16 year old asian kid.
- exactly, going to ground is the worst idea in a self defense situation.Amicus
- Not all jiu-jitsu is ground, If you train traditional Gi. It allows more control of someones clothing. Cross training is the key though. Judo, Boxing, Muay Thai.Ironmonkey

It is great if you see it as a chess game.
- more like wizards chess with the destruction included ;)Amicus
- exactly like chess. +50Ironmonkey

chess... that's what they tried to say about boxing too.

BJJ I love it!!!!!!!!
Purple belt, I train out of Gracie Barra Pasadena. I took gold at the Las Vegas international. After I get a few work projects out of the way I'm going to set my sights on Mundials 2012. If your in town and need to train, feel free to hit me up.- Also if your in Orange County hit me!Ironmonkey
- Orange County - I've trained with Erik Paulson. He's an amazing grappler..ebertzjaw
- I like Paulson for MMA, lots of options. Catch wrestling is good, but I personally think positional jiu-jits is solid.Ironmonkey
- Wow, good luck with the Mundials dude! I wish you the best!riskunlogic
