What's the state of Chinese design and advertising right now? Anyone worked there / have any links to share?
Been looking for sites that might give me an idea of how it all works over there, can't find any decent folios, blogs, forums, portals or job sites.
Interested to know about both smaller, 'proper design' studios who make critical / cultural work as well as commercially driven agencies.

i have worked in mainland china and taipei and hong kong.. their design offices are very similar to our own.. perhaps they employ triple the design staff compared to any NYC design studio.. i would say i am outside of your industry so posting links wouldnt help you much..
a lot of the companies are Taiwanese wealthy families who are the manufacturers for production of all products you probably purchase..
their day work hours are around the hours of 7am-11pm with mid morning break, lunch and dinner breaks. but generally they work more hours than you.
not sure what you really want to hear.. i worked in conditions that outshine the best of design studios and out disgusted the worst smelling hole on earth with their lack of anything.. heh.
oi.. i been to china 31 times in my career. i found Newstoday when i was in china.. thats how i met QBN.. looking for the news.. as everything there is blocked.. google, yahoo.. cnn .bbc.. all fucking blocked at least it was back then.. fucking crazy!!
- 7am to 11pm is a looong working day :(AdamWintle
- its an average day..also they usually work 6 days a week not 5. sometimes a full 7 days..e-pill

That thing called "eye for design" does simply not exist in china.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that it's a complete different culture, but at the same time there's amazing design in Japan. They simply don't give a fuck about it I reckon.
Or they just like cheap stuff and they want the design to look cheap as well.- Your comment shows a complete ignorance of Chinese culture. The idea that good design aesthetics don't exist is ridiculousSigDesign

I had a lot of Chinese classmates back in the college. Some of them were really hardworking but they always incorporate some Asian influence in their work like, dragons, blossoms, chinese letters etc... which doesn't always work well with western design. But if they don't do that I guess we blame them for being copy cats. They need to create their own style.

There's a scene.
There's a lot of average work but plenty of emerging talent as well:

Only a few links posted so far, mostly reinforcing the sentiment that China's a plagiaristic dust bowl. This certainly isn't true of their architecture or contemporary art, so why graphic design?
I refuse to believe they're still stuck in mid-naughties vector funk. They work harder than everyone else, it's easier / cheaper for them to actually make things, and there are so fucking many of them...
