So i picked up a copy of CS3 creative suite over a year ago. CS4 was out at the time, but I did not care for the price tag of the latest and greatest. So I found someone selling a license of CS3 on amazon for $650. Ordered it and have been using it without issue.
I never bothered to register because I did not care to be in adobe's mailing list.
Last week I decided to upgrade to CS5.5, so I purchased the upgrade, again through amazon. The upgrade requires me to enter the CS3 license in order to install. I did, and to my surprise it did not work.
So I call adobe and they told me that my license of CS3 was not valid. asked me if i had a receipt of purchase. So I sent them my receipt and have been waiting for a response from them since Saturday.
I have a feeling that adobe will just tell me, too bad you paid $650 for a license that is not valid. You still need to purchase the entire thing again.
My question is, are people allowed to sell their software license whenever they want to?

you are never actually purchasing software, you are purchasing a license. and in most cases licenses are non-transerable. if you do want to transfer a license you'd have to go through adobe themselves and see if they're good with it, but i wouldn't be surprised if they they're not.
had the license already been used? if so, i'd see about getting a refund if possible.

So all adobe licenses are non transferable?
- generally, all licenses are that way. but again, you never know until you contact adobe.SteveJobs

What bugs me about this, more than the cost of the license itself, is that these being the industry standard tools, we have to just suck it up.

How do you know it was a legit version? If you never registered, you would never know.
I bought a copy of 3D Studio many years ago from someone that won it (so they said, as they were SoftImage user). I asked for the serial number, called Discreet (before Autodesk owned it) and they confirmed it had never been registered. I bought it, registered, and have been able to upgrade each time.
Dunno if Adobe is the same, but Autodesk does not allow license transfers, once someone buys it/registers it, that's it.
I agree, if Adobe does the same, that is kinda bs.

^ if you're using it commercially, it's not a bad idea.

I am selling my CS5.5 Upgrade.
I listed it on CL for $400, but I am willing to negotiate with anyone from QBN.I purchased the upgrade because I thought that my CS3 license was valid. Tried to install it and found out that my CS3 license was not valid, so the upgrade did not work. So I had to go ahead and purchase the complete version. I tried to return the upgrade but Amazon returned it because they do not take back software that has been opened.
San Diego area people only please. (Unless you don't mind driving to San Diego to pick it up)
Mssg me if interested.
