I hear you can italicize and bold fonts these days... maybe even play with leading and kerning?
:Pseriously tho, you can do some rotataion and I think I read somewhere about gradient fills and letter stroke...

Also, look into @fontface. There's no reason to be stuck with system fonts for all your hard work learning this stuff.

Drop Shadow can be used for blur effects, Drop Shadows, Glows, Inset bevels
