I'm an idiot. Never backed up my work. My imac HD took a dump on me. All of my work, tax/expense sheet for this year, videos of my children, pictures etc. The HD isn't even showing up when i boot from disc and look for it in disc utility....
I looked into data recovery and one place said $2,400 dollars...(drive savers) looking into my home insurance and am hoping intellectual property is covered on the computer? probably a longshot....
Any other options?

As Cy said, keep trying to get your HD to load. If it does, something like SuperDuper might be a life saver. I've used it to clone questionable disks in a pinch and it worked perfectly. http://www.shirt-pocket.com/Supeā¦

I don't know why the link didn't work for you. I just tried it again myself and I landed right on the SuperDuper page as expected. And even their download link worked. If there's something wrong with the link try Googling for "download SuperDuper" instead. I don't recall if you'll need a serial number but I'm sure you can either "obtain" one or just bite the bullet and buy one.

Same thing happened to me and I shat a brick. Single user mode told me a failed hard drive, took it out and connected to another mac with one of those SATA enclosures via USB and everything was still there. Try it first, its worth a shot.
