When we submit designs for logos or websites, my boss always insists we write "Intellectual property of _______ " at the bottom of the page. I mean we haven't copyrighted anything so is there even any point in doing that? If someone rips it or uses it without paying would that line actually help us legally really?

You don't need to 'copyright' every piece of work, but including a little statement to remind potential thieves and rip-off artists which side of the law they're sitting on can't be a bad thing, no?

isn't not paying for a copyright a form of stealing anyway ?

Okay, I'm just pissed because I've pdf'd 7 pages of concepts and compiled into one pdf. Now need to do them all again cause of that f@ing little line.

^ Just open the PDF in Illustrator one page at a time to add the line. Seriously, it would take about 37 seconds.
And copyright is automatic, you don't need to pay or register anything.

Obviously, you're working in a business or business model, where anyone can steal your work and reuse it.
It would take the Internet cops or lawyers a million years to catch up with thieves. See illegal music downloading for example. Not enough resources to track everyone, plain and simple or the RIAA would be doing it non-stop.

All you need is a date printed on it, really.

You need to pay for copyright? the creator of the work owns the copyright upon creation
- All you pay for is the registration fee. But registration of © isn't always necessary. See below.Kiino

Complete page on the specifics:
http://copyright.gov/laws/+ excerpts from the wikipedia page on copyright:
First Owner of Copyright:
The author of a work is the initial owner of the copyright in it, and may exploit the work himself or transfer some or all the rights conferred by the copyright to others. The author generally is the person who conceives of the copyrightable expression and fixes it or causes it to be fixed in a tangible form.Registration of Copyright:
While copyright in the United States automatically attaches upon the creation of an original work of authorship, registration with the Copyright Office puts a copyright holder in a better position if litigation arises over the copyright. There's much more on the subject here:

Further to the point detritus made that the symbol/statement reminds people...there are more & more people these days, both in the visual arts community & on the client side who either:
1.) don't know the facts, or
2.) offer assorted half-baked theories about what they think is true. The uninformed, the misinformed and the willing infringers.
