its pretty old... maybe 4 or 5 years.
it was working fine and then I closed it for a second and when I opened it back... it sounded like it was gonna start but the screen was off.
tried to turn it off and back on and it sounds like its turning on but nothing on the screen. Tried the sound buttons to see if it sounds and nothing... tried the brightness and nothing.I had some important stuff in thre... but most if it was backed up.
u think this is fixable?
it might be time to get a new computer.
I might get a macbook air in the mean time.
sad times

Mine is from 2007 and has been acting a little weird lately. Planning on getting a new one soon as a first payment for some freelance work. Bartering is nice.

yup, ide check the HD, I had an '07 mac pro that "died" on me, so i drove from Culiacan Mexico to Phoenix to buy a new 64 bit mac pro, then drove to SF to check out my house, but on the way to SF my truck overheated in the desert blowing the motor, so that trip costed me $14,000.00, new mac, new jasper engine, gas, hotels.
1 month later I bought a hard drive for the '07 mac and it was fine, so my $14,000 trip was not even necessary.

I would back-up the hard-drive immediately. I don't think the not starting thing was a blip, the motherboard may be failing and they're not worth the cost to repair.

i have one from 2006 and when it starts up its like an old man trying to pick up his glasses that fell on the floor.. a slow weak tired groan.. then you here the regular buzzing that occurs and the lower left region from edge to keys is completely blackened from the intense heat that the battery or what even is under that area that melts anything it touches.. and apple care it melted itself away too..
just keep using til you know its completely dead.. then climb a tall tree and chuck into air.

Mine is from 2007 and crashed frequently... Black screen, dead, nothing. It happened in summer more frequently. I changed the motherboard and it never happened again.
And that's the reason why summer vacations were invented.
- How much was the motherboard repair? When my Macbook died they wanted $957.00 for the repair, not including shipping. I bought a new machine, pulled the HD out of the old one and put it in an external case.Josev

Id say logical board,
something similar happend to me with my old old old macbook,

after I closed it and opened it again stoped working again!
Im glad I plugged the external hardrive and did the back up for the day.
what u guys think it is?

i'd also check the fans.

I thought mine was dead earlier this year. Made terrible buzzing noises at startup and I was convinced the HD was dying. I took it to the "Genius" Bar at the Apple Store and within seconds they deemed it dead and beyond repair.
I took it apart, noticed that a fan had worked itself loose and disconnected the HD on its own. A replacement fan and a reconnected wire and it's back to normal. And the Apple guys refused to even look in it!

mine is from 2008.... i dont wanna upgrade cuz the new black keyboard sucks compared to the older silver keyboard....
battery blew up while i was working on it.... crazy... on battery #3 now.
and the motherboard was fried last year. which is common i hear.
but this thing is a beast.

Same thing happened to mine, it was the output to the monitor that was broken also it would not give a signal to an external monitor.
It was far to expensive to repair, bought a new one started old one with T pressed and transferred my files.
This is the last apple product I will be buying.

I got my logic board replaced in an apple recall, judging by symptoms you will likely get yours repaired for free too:

maybe just the screen died, try connecting another display to backup your stuff..

Video out on mine died due to a the Faulty NVIDIA processor. IT was a silent recall so depending on just exactly what the "dead" symptom is, this could be it.

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.or it could be the HDD, mine now makes a terrible grinding sound.

i just had a similar thing. went to sleep wouldn't wake up. powered down and on again, and after that shit started getting bad. tons of beach balls all the time. backed everything up (found tons of corrupted files, despite all diagnostic tools saying everything was OK), nuked and paved the machine and everything seemed ok. then the other day, same thing happened. ran Apple HWTs and reported that my drive was fucked. I'll bet if I replace the HD, everything will be ok though.
Of course this is the MBP that I spilled an entire cup of coffee on a couple of years ago...
