Are there any neighborhoods that are reasonable in price and still near the subway and safe? Does Queens if you work in Manhattan?
I'm looking for something bigger than a studio.

$1500 is about right.
Astoria Queens, you can get something cheaper.
- i lived in astoria for 11 years.. great restaurants, bars and cafe, super markets. subways.epill
- the downside- ConEd located in astoria, lots of power outages LOTS!!epill
- rent is less than williamsburg or most other 5 mile distance from manhattan areas..epill
- astoria has some of NYC longest blocks.. get ready for long walks of 1 block = 10 minepill

that is a good solid description of the 2 boroughs.. for tourists.

You might get $1500 in uws of you go up by 100s street. Technically it's not really uws, it's more Harlem. Anything above 90s can get sketchy.
You can get lucky in soho or les for that price but chances are it will be studio tiny shoe box. I would go les for more fun vibe. Just don't go too east.
