Heading to Brazil for Christmas this year to see some of my fiancées family for about 8 or 9 days.
What are the must-see destinations for:
- Art scene?
- Beer?
- Music?
- Historical monuments?

I should say that we'll be staying in São Paulo.

It's okay, I expected at least 50% of the responses to be warnings about safety. It's like someone asking about a trip to Washington DC, and being told that the whole area is as unsafe as the Northeast and Southeast districts.

I don't know much about Sao Paulo, but it is a bit of a business centre. If you have time (and a car) maybe you want to visit some of the nearest cities.
If you haven't visited Brazil ever before, try to make it to Copacabana. I would recommend travelling even further north but you will run out of time.
Things to try there - fruits. Go to any street fair and pick at least 5 that you never heard of and give them a try.
- Don't drink beer, drink caipirinha! and try mate leao, kind of an ugly fizzy drink (very Brazilian thing I'd say).
Sorry for the non-substantial recommendations, but you surely be fine asking your fiancee. I have family working in Sao Paulo but I doubt a 70 y/o photochemist would be of much help in terms of good gigs in town.

Thanks maikel, some good recommendations there for sure.

Sao Paulo is huge, bear that in mind.
I won't tell you it is dangerous, because you've already know that.If you're with locals you've got to worry about, ask'em to take you to "Vila Madalena" at night, "Jardins" for nice restaurants, "Av Paulista" for the busy brazilian life.
Other than that, sorry to say, but Sao Paulo has 11mi inhabitants, is busy, crazy traffic jam, watch out for "motoboys" (check the video), if you have a weekend free, definitely worth going to Rio de Janeiro.

(shameless plug for a friend who wrote it)I have only been to Sao Paulo a few times and only for a couple of days at a time. It's a huge city and things are pretty spread out but there is no shortage of museums, restaurants and cultural events there. I would recommend spending some of your time in Rio if you can as well as Ilha Grande which is a beautiful island in the state of RJ that is a natural reserve and is total paradise in my book.
Boa Viagem!

Safety wise - do not wear jewelry. Do not carry an ipod, iphone, etc. Get a cheap digital camera you don't give a shit handing to a mugger. Where beach shorts a tee shirt and flip flops.
Look, I was mugged there. My friend, a Rio native was mugged there. My friends girlfriend fell asleep on the bus, woke up and all her shit was gone - off her body. Watch, phone, camera, bag. Gone.
Other than that, the place is awesome, but lots of people there want what you have and don't give a shit about shooting you or sticking a sharp object into you to get it.
