I heard somewhere that these are used to digitize books. You type in a word the computer can't read, and they sell on the service for something like .001¢

mikotondria3 - Captcha uses two words, one it knows is correct and one it can't read. If you get the known word right, it assumes you've correctly read the other word too and adds it to the list of possible candidates (after enough identical replies, it also becomes a "known" word). If you screw up the known word, it assumes you're stupid and tells everyone on Facebook.

there's a documentary on the guy who invented it. one word out of the pair is used as a "human test" and the other is a word scanned from an old book that the character recognition software can't understand. the idea is that if you can figure out the first one, you're probably able to figure out the second. it doesn't matter if you get the second wrong because it doesn't know what it actually is

Anyone know of any decent captcha plugins for Wordpress? Have done a quick search on the WP plugins page and the first few are pretty average.
