..use one of those off-the-shelf website in a box abominations?
I appreciate most people here would not choose this option, but the client has and I was wondering whether anyone had experience of using such a thing?

Tell him/her to cut their loses and use something current & lightweight like Wordpress, Drupal, Squarespace or the like...
YOU are the mediator between the client and the technology, thus YOU tell them what is what; not the other way around Fax_Benson...
