System is broken. They did not let things fail completely during the down fall few years back. Granted we would be in the crappers if that happened but it would have been better for a long term.
Just putting bandaid on a dam with a crack and hoping that someone else will fix it.

We're talking about the debt limit, not broader financial issues. All Congress has to do is vote to raise it. It's a problem of their own creation

debt limit is the result of poor planning and thinking that the problem can be solved by spending and printing more money

- debt limit has more to do with the US dollar being the global reserve currencyTheBlueOne

Boehner hates Obama, and hates Democrats, and just wants his moment in the speaker's chair to show that he's powerful. He'll walk away from any feasible deal just to show that. T-minus a few cable tv interviews and counting before we get to see his orange ass fake cry again.
- Not sure anyone in Washington hates anyone else, they're all in the same club...TheBlueOne
- ..however Boehner is being pushed by the retards in the Tea Party to do this or else be voted outTheBlueOne
- Of course, if anyone in Washington had principles or balls...ah, why bother...TheBlueOne

But to ukit's point, this article sums it up

So the problem is easy to solve. Just vote to raise the debt limit.
- Reagan raised it 18 times during his presidency. Just do it, already!ItTango
- it was raised 8 times during bush as well.dorf
- Well that was so we had enough money to kill brown people and cut taxes on the richTheBlueOne
- I mean you have to raise the debt ceiling for shit like that. You know, when deficits don't matter.TheBlueOne

I don't believe it's broken, as it is wildly flexible. It has been stretched to the point of calamity, though... that's where we are now. Everything hinges on clear thinking, which is in sort supply at the moment.
There are ways out of this, some of the players are motivated by self interest and personal grudges. It doesn't look good.
