"In her music, Ms. Winehouse could sketch out her troubles and laugh them off, with a resilient beat and that insouciant flutter in her voice. Outside the recording studio, as a human being separate from her art, Ms. Winehouse couldn’t do that. Her songs, it turned out, would be wiser than she was."

She had so much talent as a singer song writer but was so fucked up. I'd seen her out in Camden a few times, she was a nasty piece of work. Mixed emotions about her really

Dying young is always a pity. But let's no confuse her death with being a sad thing.

- Sad for people who cared about her. Compassion is a universal concept. She made poor choices, but I feel for her family.Gucci

She was way too broken, there was no fixing her
Too bad, she was quite talented.

"Talent" seems to change our opinion on things. Drug addict with talent and money = shame they die. Drug addict with no talent, living in squatter house = who cares if they die. It would seems people tried to help her, she was in rehab, and didn't change. Bad things happen, but it's not like people didn't try to change it. It's a shame hitting rock bottom was death instead of turning herself around.
- you gotta fall to rock bottom before you do turn things around; some just keep falling...adumbratesly

From Patti Smith's web site:
"AMY JADE WINEHOUSE
September 14, 1983 - July 23, 2011
She was a rare thing. She was fresh and she was deadly. I had such affection for her voice. She possessed something of Timi Yuro, Toni Fisher, Dinah Washington. So many singers we have all loved.
Amy was born on my late husband Fred Sonic Smith's birthday. He would have appreciated that a musician of such merit shared his day. Now she joins him and all our precious artists that we have lost much too soon.
Of what propelled her toward self destruction, I can say little. How can one person really know the pain of another? But of her voice, this is something I can speak of. No one can dispute that she was as good as any of them, any of the greats that is."
She included this video... strangely appropriate:

She was 57? So young....
