I always wonder how they did things before software, like the stuff you see in star trek and way back to the Ten Commandments. It also of seeing the first beta of Adobe Premiere. The teacher was asking some of the continuing ed people how long and how much effects would take to produce that could be done even back then in minutes.

I'm thinking now, and I wonder if Enterprise's warp effect in Star Trek- The Motion Picture from 1979 wasn't exactly that flying asshole wipe effect, especially with with flare at the end of the sequence (at 0.27):
- That was the most expensive movie ever when it came out. Of course I was there opening day. (GEEK!!)CyBrainX
- Haha so was I, despite the fact I was 6 at the time. :DContinuity
- Nice, I came out of that thinking it was the best movie I ever saw. I was 16. I've seen every one on the day they came out.CyBrainX

I find so much of the hands on sandbox approach to motion graphics has disappeared.
You might be interested in john whitney's work if you like this stuff. It was earlier in the 60s but he actually used computers and optical techniques.

one of my friends used scanimate a couple years ago for a project he worked on. I guess the dude who owns the scanimate they used filmed an interview with him about it:
Heres the project, theres the scanimate stuff appears like 10 mins in and at the end:
