    • makes me wonder if you even understand what spec work meansBoz
    • Strange, I wondered if you knew. That's why I posted the "about" link for you.nb
    • This may help http://www.no-spec.c…nb
    • yes but you comparing a contest to a spec work makes it very clear you don't understand what spec work is.Boz
    • your link is relevant for "design contests" like this: "We have a beer ad and we want designers to design this ad so we are making a contest for $10k".. That's a problem. WHen someone tells you and say, make whatever and the coolest innovation and app made is voted first will get $100k is not bad. It's not exploiting anyone, especially since your app is still yours, they are just paying for your time you would invest anyways in making something.Boz

    • Also, anyone can vote. Reminds me of "zomg vote for my band to play Warped Tour!!!!!"nb
    • They only pay for the time of one developer hence it is equivalent to spec in the end. Most entrants get shafted.monospaced

"The contest will give selected developers pre-release access to “Sony Tablet” prototypes and the latest version of Adobe tools."

    huh?

    • selected?SteveJobs
    • if you are one of the chosen based on your app I believeBoz
  • Boz0

What they are saying is that if you make a cool app and you are one of the chosen by the judges, you will get access to the stil-not-released Sony Tablet and you will get the latest version of major Adobe tools.

  • SteveJobs0

so you have to be chosen, in order for a chance to be chosen again.. to win?

    • just don't enter, before you hurt yourself.registe
    • i'm not interested myself, just curious how well this thing is going to go over with such a tough point of entry.SteveJobs
  • SteveJobs0

they should have just released a tablet emulator like you get with the ipad/iphone/touch, to make it mroe accessible to everyone.

    • btw, 'mroe' is how i say 'more' now. that was on purpose.SteveJobs
  • Boz0

SteveJobs, wtf are you talking about dude.. you build a cool app you think will be awesome, you submit and if you are picked as one of the runners/winners you get access to the upcoming Sony Tablets and you get free Adobe latest suite of tools. What's so confusing to you?

You don't need "emulators" perse because you already have the tools to test and debug because Sony tablets are Android. The only thing they want to give you access to might be specific APIs and certain very native APIs that only that Sony tablet might have if you want to improve you app before the Sony tablets are officially released.

This is a Sony campaign and sponsored contest. They want to launch their tablets with cool apps and they know that Adobe/Flash folks are very creative so they sponsored this and will give you exposure and your app once you launch with them... not to mention that Adobe will show off your app at Adobe Max 2011 in October.

Btw, if you want to build an app, you can download all the tools for free and use them within 30 days .. cause that's pretty much about how much you have time anyways.. I think deadline is Sept.

    • I'm talking specific Sony stuff because one of the tablets has 2 screens.Boz

    • Eight people/teams get awards. The rest get nothing. Not spec work, but there are valid comparisons and reasons to be upset.monospaced
    • concerned, I guess.monospaced

Oooh a Boz thread. Errr... must scramble to forge some convoluted argument against whatever it is he is saying... NO SPEC WORK, SILLY BOZ BAD!

Sorry, that No-Spec followed by a snarky remark seemed horrendously uninformed and clearly just posted to get a response.

This is not spec work. It's much more an entrepreneurial contest. You make an app using Adobe software that you think will be great on Sony hardware, and if a panel of people think it is the best, you get a fuckload of publicity, money and competitive edge through being given access to new technology before the rest of your peers do. If you don't, you retain your shit-hot product that you can go make money off anyway.

If you're making an app that has no money-making potential, and bank on making your money by winning the contest then you are just foolish.

This is not spec work. This is much more like a non-government grant/publicity fest.

    • < Third paragraph describes spec work. Lots of spec jobs allow you to keep your work and sell it if you want.nb
    • It's fine. Do it if you want. But I think work like this hurts the industry more than helps. No big deal.nb
    • you don't fucking understand what spec work is.. stop talking about it because you are a confused young man.Boz
    • It is not spec work. It's an entrepreneurial competition. This is not work for a client that if unpicked, gets nothing and is worthless.orrinward
    • worthless.orrinward

but like what app do you think you would need to invent to win that price?

    • something that tracks people and thoughts for marketing evaluation in real timeVikingKingEleven
  • Amicus0

how bout an app that automatically eliminates all the spam comments in anyone forum you frequent?

  • chrisRG0

FFS, why do you people have to always complaint about something?
Boz just posted some that is indeed related to design, and might be cool if you want to do an App, wtf?

Its a shame as the European Adobe team launched a competition a few weeks ago:
    http://www.adobemobilechallenge.…

Going to drop Michael Chaize an email to see if we can enter both comps with one app!

    ..will report back.

    • I see no reason why not. Neither company/sponsor has any intention of paying you until they vote, so go ahead!monospaced
  • orrinward0

    'Most entrants get shafted'...

No, they don't. You build an app that you will release for monetary gain, as any App Developer would, but you enter it into this competition with a chance for extra exposure and help.

If a company says 'We at ACME Products are looking for a new logo. If you 1000 people make us some, we will pick one and pay them' - Then the other entrants get shafted as they end up with a worthless product.

Think about getting an app you developed onto the front page of iTunes - You get extra exposure from it, but essentially, your product does not depend on getting picked to be on the front page.

The 'front page' of this 'app store' is an award, free exposure and 100k.

is it possible to find a high quality app that whores itself in such a contest?
