Gradient question

I have a bar chart where the top bar needs to be a dark red, and the bottom bar needs to be a very light red. There are 10 bars, but I dont want to see the actual gradient in the bars themselves.
Whats the best way to take a gradient and break it up into 10 even subdivisions? This is probably something simple that im just not thinking about for some reason.

start with the base red and overlay the light red at 10%, 20%, 30% etc. take a not of each of these values.

Probably is a better way, but I would do this:
1. Make a selection and fill with your gradient
2. Image > Adjust > Posterise... Levels: 10

use illustrator and blend steps (even just to create the colors) and done!

Any way to do this in photoshop?
- Tried making a file 11px tall, but surprisingly it doesn actually work right.CygnusZero4
- 10px I mean.CygnusZero4

1. Make the red a swatch colour.
2. Subtract 10% with each step down.- Problem is they might be adding an 11th bar.CygnusZero4
- So you subtract 9%.i_monk

now that you are efficient in illustrator mono you should start work on not being a complete bell end.
- WTF is your problem?monospaced
- are you butt hurt because your suggestion wasn't the ideal one? don't take it so personally and please don't resort to insults like a cuntmonospaced
- insulting me. It's totally uncalled-for and makes you look like a cunt. Peace.monospaced

make it in illustrator. Make one object the starting colour, one object the desired final colour and set a blend of 8 steps. Simple.

Just did the Illustrator way. It doesnt work right. It does the same thing it does in Photoshop when you make a file 10px high.
There is this weird effect where top of each bar is slightly lighter than the bottom. Try it out, it doesnt work. I need to be able to get 10 FLAT subdivisions of a gradient.
I would do the opacity way mentioned above, but Im avoiding that because they might be adding an 11th bar.
- increment by 9% then. i'm assuming maths isn't a strong point either.bumdrizzle
- This isn't the case - This is just how you perceive it next to the contrasting element.orrinward
- Swatch the top and bottom of each bar - They will be the same.orrinward

You've actually got the solution and your eyes are deceiving you.

in illustrator:
make a box in one color
make another box another color
go to object > blend > blend options - set to specified steps 10
select both boxes
object > blend > make- set it to 8 actually, or 9 for 11 shades, etc...johnny_wobble
- Did this already. Try it out and zoom into them, see what it does.CygnusZero4
- Check the top and bottom of each bar, they wont be the same color, which means this isnt useful to me.CygnusZero4
- haha, of course they're the same unless you're doing it wrongmonospaced
- you're trippin', cygnusjohnny_wobble

Why do you need this 100% automagical? Just adjust each bar's colour by hand.
It's 10 bars, not 10,000.

How many idiots does it take to make a bar chart?
- Just pictured all of us round a table saying different shitorrinward

i think your eyes are playing tricks on you. sample the color at the top and bottom of the bar. they will be the same. putting white space between each bar will minimize this effect as well.
- monospaced0
of course the illustrator blend steps method works...

Making graphs in Photoshop?
Talk about going full retard.

I'm not the one trying to do bar charts in after effects fella! Good luck with that!goldieboy - Charts are done idiot #2. I was told this is how they wanted them built. fuckin amateur hour on qbn.CygnusZero4
- haha, what ever mategoldieboy
- CygnusZero40
^ Cant use Illustrator for this dipshit. If you arrive at a freelance job, and they tell you the charts must be constructed in aftereffects, what do you tell them? To fuck off and keep their money? Idiot.

exactly what mono said,
Bland tool in illustrator, its a VERY useful little tool.
- monospaced0
use whatever the fuck you have to to make the charts, but use Illustrator to create the colors...and then just sample the values
