always do layer comps.

if you have a psd with a lot of layers, some shit turned off, some on, as a developer it's hard to know what the actual states are. as a designer, you know because you made it and it's in your head. it takes one minute to make them and saves tons of time. if files don't ahve layer comps i send them back.

Everything in one file.

Does it increase the file size? Why could you just make a separate folder in you layers palette with changed variation?
- < this will increase file size... layer comps are pretty sweettap

this might help

Obviously having everything in one file would make it larger than having content separated into smaller files.

probably just because that's how they're used to working... developers tend to like photoshop stuff to be the way they're used to, as fishing around trying to figure out stuff takes time.... and people start asking "when will it be done" the quesiton all developers dread more than any other....
- this is their job, afterall.doesnotexist
- Developers get a bunch of different PSD methods, guessworks sucs and possible problems...vaxorcist

layer comps make it easy to turn off/on multiple layers at once. So, you can use them to see on/off states without copying a million common layers, or having your developer guess which ones should be on or off at any given view.

So its just a process style... If I create a variation on a comp, I just duplicate the folder and then change what I need too. But I guess its not the way the developers like it.

Layer Comps files will be smaller than duplicate groups, as the layers aren't duplicated, just arranged.
Using layer comps also means the developer will not have to touch any layers and therefore potentially alter designs. You simply send the file over and they click on each comp for how that layer should look.
It's much more accident-proof than telling someone to turn layers on and off.

Layer comps can be very sketchy to use, especially since it fucks with your normal photoshop saving workflow. But once you have it, it can be a worthwhile manager.

I use it all the time. Can be very useful for sequencing UI states/transitions as well

Could be useful, could also be a nightmare loaded with surprises.

ughh they are the worst!
I just use folders with numbers. If they can't figure that out, they must be retarded.
- Just watched the vid. Maybe I spoke too soon, haha. I'm scared to use them though.Frosty_spl

Why not just send jpgs? Layer comps are horrible. If you make a change, you have to re-make them all over again.

- Word. I use layer comps too, but FW pages are far superiorprajna

they're nice when you have to make a shit load of jpgs and a pdf.
