Do any of you use an online backup service?
I'm thinking about signing up with www.crashplan.com ...

IMHO, if you're willing to spend some bucks for a long term investment, you should do something like this:

gonna try this out

I've found that backing up to an external drive isn't ideal, because generally I forget to keep it up, and it takes so long to transfer stuff to the drive.
Yeah, I think online might be good, because it's off site. I'm working on my own - so it's just one machine that needs to be backed up. I'd like a simple solution that can deal with the worst.

One thing that pisses me off, is the fact that the ToS of all these companies states if they lose yr data - you're on yr own...
http://support.crashplan.com/dok…
Which is kind of ironic, considering you're paying them to keep your data safe.
- Yes but how often have you heard of them losing data?ribit

I backup to my external every few days, but I also use Backblaze. The only thing is by default, it doesn't backup your Library folder, Applications folder, and a few others, so it's not like a mirrored version of your hard-drive. Not sure if the same way with Crashplan. They are probably VERY similar.

lukas - I'm in the exact same situation as you...
I used to back up on external HDs but it was always a pain in the ass and I have yet to find a (windows) application that makes it as easy as you think it should be. So as a result I only made my backups every few months... Not good! And of course unless you store your HDs off-site you're not covered in the event of theft, fire, etc...
So in Jan. of 2011 I switched to Crashplan and so far, so good. It took months to upload all of my data (around 400GB) but it all happened in the background and didn't seem to slow down my machine.
I would never put all of my eggs in 1 basket, but the peace of mind in knowing that all of my work is continually backed up via Crashplan is very nice.
- thx - I think I'll give it a go, problem is - I'm not sure how much anyone can trust these companieslukus_W2
- I guess it's a question of spreading yr eggs into a few basketslukus_W2
- Yeah multiple backups are always best, so I look at it as an additional backup - not my ONLY backup.nocomply
- Of course I'm guilty as charged for not backing up as much as I should. :)nocomply

Considering getting started with a service....any recent suggestions?

Iam using Crashplan. I really like it.
It automatically backup all my stuff on an external drive and on their server. I can sleep well now. My home can explode tomorrow and I wont lose anything.

ideaist - not sure how long it took, probably weeks to get everything backedup, but it does it in the background, so you don't really notice.

bump.
need to do this today. think my computer is about to explode :/ literally. my mac book pro battery has warped the area next to the track pad and there's a huge bag below where the nail is holding it together. unbelievable, it's only 2 1/2 years old.
Crashplan?
- fuck!oey

dude put everything on an external now!
after that, search for a web option, but if you're on the verge loosing the machine, a hard drive is faster. To backup on the web takes a lot of time uploading everything..
- great writing. I didn't had my morning coffee yet.ESKEMA
- LOL Eskema, I'm ON IT right now... backing all my stuff up on 2 externalsohhhhhsnap
- machine is hot as hell. waiting for the second external to erase junk i dont need then off to apple tomorrowohhhhhsnap

If you don't have a place where you can go and get one today in town, get an Amazon Prime account (I think they give you a free trial period), and choose $3.99 next day shipping and get a new external drive delivered by tomorrow. Download Carbon Copy Cloner (free):
And back that shit up!
- I'd rather do it offsite in case of a fire or such.dbloc

Take the HD out of that dying MacBook now and back it up to another machine ASAP. Replace the battery too.

a backup in the same room as the computer is useless. If your home burn and if a thief take it all. You need a backup in another location.

any more recommendations for online backup. I need to pull the trigger on this.
- benfal990
Crashplan.
Go. Do it.
