Email has been a cloud service since... always, this is especially apparent when using IMAP on phone, computer and the web client. Every change is visible everywhere, you can pick up your half-finished email draft from anywhere.
But as far as phone software cloud hosting goes... yesterday's announcement doesn't make so much difference here. I can already redownload the apps I purchased before and do so using the phone only, without the computer. The only problem is I don't have a list of all apps I bought like I have in the Mac App Store and the iPhone store doesn't make it clear which apps I had already paid for.

i'm still on mobileme and got a message that they're renewing/extending my subscription until next summer for free while all my shit migrates to icloud.
nice idea.. but like some are saying, it's already being done

Reasonable synopsis from the NYT re iCloud... http://nyti.ms/mG6QMF

My bet is on all software being cloud-hosted within a few years. Kind of like an Onlive service for graphics.

pros- no more worrying about backing shit up on hard drives, or dvd's and worrying about losing everything in a fire/tsunami/tornado.
-instant access to everythingcons- world could have access to your shit.
-could lose shit anyway if someone hacks into skynet.

Wow this really derailed a lot, as expected.
I don't get why people keep choosing sides, embrace the choices. Right now I have my iPhone in sync with Gmail for contacts and whatever, I have Dropbox for free with 5gbs already, I even have a Zumodrive account that I never use and Amazon locker too. I'll probably have that Google thing also. I'll have also all these icloudy goodness. What is the problem? Can't I have it all? Do I have to choose only one?? I love them all and can't understand why some people feel the need to choose only one...

i just spent a fuck-ton of time building a website for a company who put all their eggs into one basket as being the frontrunner for a true cloud based solution.
the site launched a few months ago and their product is still held up in production limbo... this could be a disaster for them.
i still don't quite get the part that if i have 10gb of photos on my iphone, it's also 10gb on my ipad, imac and macbook pro. to a certain extent i love the backup redundancy but what is going to happen with my 85gb of music on my imac and my 16gb iphone? the company i did the site for had no idea, but i'm sure apple has it figured out. (grain of salt).
- They could never have provided true iPhone integration, so it's their own fault if they're fucked nowanimatedgif

My mail/cal/contacts already sync with google... what is so special about icloud?
ios & lion look like mundane upgrades...
Also boz the troll is bloody annoying as usual.

the point of iCloud is, that it just works!
- pillhead0
Gesture Gesture Gesture, so what happens if you are not running a laptop.

I'll say it again. The point of iCloud is this...
When I plug in my iPhone to the wrong system, I lose all of my podcast subscriptions, etc. if I don't unplug it before I realize what I've done.
That in itself is my #1 reason for lusting on iCloud.

Hey ernexbcn - you're saying that iCloud is the hub? I thought it would be the repository for all of the data that you can then subsequently distribute to your various (up to 10, right?) devices. Is that the case or not?
- if I recall correctly they keep the data for 30 days for all your devices to sync to iternexbcn
- ...then once synched subsequent updates/adds are distributed? That means a really robust RDBMS I reckon...adumbratesly

sup with this iTunes match..??
I download music via piratebay.., pay 30bucks and I have legal music or what?
- ernexbcn0
Well, as always, no one's forcing any of you to use these features, so if you don't see any positive in this keep trolling baby.
- Just because somebody doesn't share your point of view doesn't make them a troll.Horp
- do you realize you're being a cunt to me because I'm just disagreeing on the usefulness of a apple productGeorgesII
- It's not that, your are making up shit out of the air without even comprehending the serviceernexbcn
- "making up shit out of the air"
Is that the icloud marketing strapline?Horp - you don't even rationally understand why you need to defend apple, but you do it, i guess it's magickGeorgesII
- yup, he's hooked on by the ballsack, doesn't even know it.Horp
- Horp0
...and also, when they update the OS, they'll update the OS requirements of all your hardware because the icloud will require that to happen, so next time they do a major upgrade that really requires ne system architecture instead of selling you one new piece of hardware, they'll sell you all of them over again... new work computer, new home computer, new laptop, new ipad, iphone etc etc etc.
Hands up if you shelved your iphone4 in favour of the iphone4 white? What will you do when iphone black comes out... get one, or wait for the iphone 5 white... or maybe hang on a little longer for the ironic 90's mac retro revival transparent candy colour casing version? Because they're already working on that.
- "what will you do when the iphone05 black comes out" is what I meant.Horp
- Horp0
So basically you get to fill up your ipad hard drive, ipod hard drive, iphone hard drive, ibook hard drive, home hard drive and work hard drive, much quicker than before, prompting you to consider upgrading to larger hard drives, and greater capacity machines in future, in order to cope with the fact you now have ten clones of the same set of files filling up every apple item you own?
Is that right? That's the great new announcement?
- ernexbcn0
Best case use for me will be transferring the photos I take with the iPhone to the Mac (iPhoto), no more need to plug into usb for that, it will do it over the air without any intervention on my part.

no, actually i don't care about having multiple copies of my stuff,
most of my work is locked on a secure drive and I only carry what need carrying with me,I'm sorry but my mind can't grasp this whole sharing gallore,
if I wanted to share all my music and other material, i just need to access my secure home network, when I leave my house, I can use my outdated vpn to access what I need,
the cloud concept is interresting, but I like my data, "safe" at home, where I have total control over it,now if you have the urge to carry all your life on 20 idevices because you can, do it,
I'm not against it, I just don't see the point.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA .. .
