So big shocker, I'm not a deisgner. I mean I guess if you wanted to insult the word itself you could call me one but nothing really serious. I've done only web design when I was younger (wish I could find some evidence of it all gone now) I've done three sites: One for a Clairvoyant (yeah...) and two for local photographers around the time of 2002 (I was like 16 or 17).
The real reason for this thread is I absolutely love ID, Branding, Logos, and illustration design. I surf the blogs on the subject read most articles even read some magazines I just don't really no where to start. So any sites or info you can give me on how to get started with things like, how to get your drawings into illustrator or Photoshop, Tools/Programs I need etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

- don't go to school if you aren't 100% committed and already pretty proficient...monospaced
- because there will be a ton of kids who are already whizzes with the software and you'll feel behind from day 1monospaced

I'm pretty sure you missed the deadline, no one starting after 2005 can become a designer anymore.

No really, what kind of designer you want to be?
Print, web, motion...there's so much to learn these days.

There are these things... Uh... I believe they call them design schools or something like that. Sounds crazy but they indeed teach this stuff there. Because the world is always in need of yet another designer.

To get your drawings into Illustrator, you'd have to scan them.
If you have no clients at the moment, make them up. Create a logo, stationery system, and a Home webpage. This is a good way to produce something nice without having to worry about a client's budget or opinion.
- yeah, i've purchased a domain and what not working that out. Just really need some direction on tools and things I need. Not really looking to make money with it.JoeGrizzly
- i meant make a webpage for the fake client... not for yourself (unless you want to).CanHasQBN

I'll put what ever I design on any canvas, such as print, web, motion. I just need to know the tools, how to transfer things from paper to illustrator & photoshop for coloring. What ever I design will be mostly random drawings and Branding such as logos, business cards, and the like.
- Yeah, scan it, and use Illustrator to make it pretty. Learn how to use the pen tool.CanHasQBN
- Take photographs of it, scan it, whatevermonospaced

Design school is not the way to learn how to use the tools. Paying for that is just a waste of money. Get the software, mess around, ask questions of your friends, Google search solutions, follow Adobe forums, and start making stuff. Once you're somewhat comfortable with the software you might think about some education.
- haha, you guys are my design "friends"
JoeGrizzly - just try to figure it out before resorting to asking us...you'll learn more that waymonospaced

@CanHasQBN any suggestions for Pen Input tools?
- CanHasQBN0
The "pen" is a tool in Illustrator. It comes with the program. It's not an actual pen that you hold. But you'll use it to create logos and any other kind of icons. Just get Illustrator and start messing around with it... you'll figure it out. You don't need to go to school to learn it.

Yeah, I'm horrid with controlling that thing. Like my mouse is horrible or my hand is just not meant to do drawings. Any pointers?

OK, enough joking around. If you are serious about wanting to be a designer, learn about grids and typography. Yes, learn the programs but if you are just messing around in Illustrator and tracing stuff you draw you made you will not be a real graphic designer, just a guy who traces drawings.
Get the books "The Elements of Typographic Style" and "Grid Systems" and read them. Study how the grids of well-designed books and magazines are constructed and copy them until you learn to make your own. etc...
