Well as someone who has followed this kind of music over the years...
I think the point here is that artists like Bass Nectar or Skrillex don't really have much to do with the actual dubstep scene that sprung up in London and the UK nearly a decade ago. But for some reason these artists have really taken off in the States, despite the fact that they would be laughed out of the room by the people who actually invented dubstep.
And yeah I agree to some extent, who gives a shit if people want to think this stuff is dubstep. But it's sort of like if Insane Clown Posse and Korn really took off, and people started to referring to that like it represented the totality of the hip hop scene. Obviously people who had been listening to hip hop for years would be slightly annoyed and want to set the record straight.
- everyone's a fucking critic. skrillex is boring bassnectar is entertaining.logi
- lols @ such a well thought diss, waste of time...logi
- haha, I thought it was a decent analogyukit
- the music is fine, people are harping on semanticsscarabin

ok ukit name some artists or be called out on theory
- ukit0
Do I really need to? There's a whole genre of music that has been around for years...and still followed by many more people than the American scene. It's not hard to find out about.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I heard Bass Nectar play before he ever called himself "dubstep". He had been DJing this bass + breakbeats style of music for years and jumped on the dubstep label once it became a buzzword.
- dskz0
yes you need to
- dskz0
for the sake of giving merit to your theory

Here you go

by the strictest sense of the word, only shit that sounds like reggae is dubstep
- ukit0
In terms of the original sound, I would say artists like
Kode9
Digital Mystikz
Loefah
Horsepower Productions
Shackleton
El-B
Skream
Slaughter Mob
Pinch
Joker
Burial
Ikonika- over half those artists are pure shit.logi
- Now you're just spouting personal opinion. This is real dubstep though, not cheesy Bass Nectarukit
- glad we ruined itscarabin

- Skream is actually interesting. outside the box was cool.MikeColdFusion

"by the strictest sense of the word, only shit that sounds like reggae is dubstep"
Well true the dub word comes from somewhere right? Dub being instrumental reggae
- capn_ron0
ukit, Thanks. i will take a listen. I like Kode9, Joker and some Skream. The others are all new to me. If I don't like it i'll make sure to start a thread titled, "how old-school dubstep ruined new dubstep"
