I have to deliver this file to the network today.
It's 1 minute long and about 5gigs (uncompressed) with alpha channelWhat would you say is a good compression to run it through for me to cut down on the file size so I can send it today, keeping the alpha channel and loosing as little quality as possible?
I'm on AE cs5/ mac
Any help will be appreciated!

H264?
- x264 (dunno about alpha though, i think it does)Hombre_Lobo
- .mp4 h264 does not support alpha.nthkl
- Douglas0
you want to keep the alpha embedded?
wont it need to be animation compression or a tiff/targa sequence?
- Miguex0
yes, alpha channel needs to stay.
I was thinking of doing PNG compression, but not sure if it's the best
- Douglas0
you could compression PhotoJpg (highquality) though and render the alpha as a separate movie.
if you gave me a final file for air as h264 i would flat out reject it.
- what year do you wor in 2003? H264 is fine********
- i work in 2003.Douglas

separate the alpha (MATT) and render pro res maybe

jpeg sequence

or some kind of sequence
- ifeltdave0
png sequence, zipped down, should cut the filesize by a lot. pngs compress extremely well when zipping, and you can save them without lossless compression.
that, or throw on a drive and courier over to them.

theres that avid DNxHD codec ... not sure if its mac, or if theres compatibility problems

obviously an image sequence would be ideal, but huge.
you can have alpha channels in videos, i think h.264 and x264 both support alpha channels, but not sure.
you'll get the best compression in x264 (followed by h.264), its pretty incredible how little quality is lost for its size.
i use handbrake btw, its free and ace.
http://handbrake.fr/- neither of those support alphas unfortunately.Chief
- Thanks chief, I'm sure that knowledge will come in handy :)Hombre_Lobo

You may want to check with someone at the network - most want uncompressed animation.

PNG is a good alternative to Animation. It's lossless, can still carry an alpha, and is usually smaller in size compared to Animation.
Or you can do what was suggested above. Render out the RGB as ProRes and a separate matte. Depends on how small you need it to be.
- fountain of knowledge here. Thanks dude. expect many emails in the future :)Hombre_Lobo
