I showed my 3 year old son the original trilogy which he loves, especially Empire Strikes Back. He's a big Boba Fett fan.
As for the prequels, they bore him easily and he usually asks for the originals to go back on.

Show him the new ones and this might happen.

Its so trendy to hate on the prequels, I think its even cool for hipsters to hate on them, but the fact is kids love them. My little sister was like 12 when it came out and she LOVED it! The 3rd is a little dark I think for young kids though. But episode 1 is something that a lot of young kids loved.
Of course for adults, some of the dialogue is very hokey in the prequels, the actors did what they could with shitty scripts, but for just brainless sci-fi action, they arent that bad.
Although if you're going to start a child out on star wars these days, go with the Clone Wars TV series. There was a movie to introduce the cartoon, but it kind of sucked, the series itself is actually pretty awesome. I have seasons 1 and 2 on bluray and its great. And I know tons of kids are hooked on it.
- Yes, they're hokey and cheesey, but theyre still fun. Jeesh, such a tough crowd.Josev

am I the only one that thinks 6 is pretty damn young?
Lego movies will do just fine, much better I'd think, as they would be something he cares about
- I watched the entire series when I was 6. I loved it.monospaced

Don't.

How can you tell if your kid is old enough to watch Empire Strikes Back, and other dark classics?

the phantom menace.
Everybody loved the phantom menace!!!!
(though seriously... I do think starting with the modern ones might ease him into it. Are 6y/o kids these days ready for subtleties and character development? might he not appreciate the newer ones more now... and love the older ones when he's about 10?)

from calles's post:
Generally, kids can understand the difference between reality and fantasy around the age of eight, but it depends on each child. Some have a more sensitive temperament in which they can't handle scary movies, themes, screen violence (implied or graphic), monsters etc., even though logically, they know they are not real.

Show him the clone wars cartoon.
I bet he wont like the OG star wars

do it in the right order, i'd never seen any of them until they were all released, me and the pops made a weekend of it. watching the first three re-releases (cleaned up and such) then the next three (1-3). haven't watched any of them since

I saw the original when it was released back in 77 when i was 2 1/2 and i loved it so much i joined the fan club. all the shit i got i never opened and/or used. i kept everything... action figures, coloring books, badges, patches, posters, t-shirts, pretty much a shitload of stuff. it's worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions today.
at least that's what i would tell all of the women i would bring into my bedroom that was covered with all of this shit. i was like the 40 year old virgin but like, at 15.

also, try to get the original originals. not the special edition originals. that musical number at jabbas palace in return of the jedi makes me want to punch a baby.
- yeah. and teach him at a young age that han shot first. "it's kill or be killed son." they gotta learn that.kona

NO start with the NEW ONES DAMMIT! He is 6 and will think its grandpas old western he's being forced to watch. The new ones are for 6 year olds, therefore 6 year olds will get it and actually give a shit what the originals are all about later. The originals are for when he's discovered weed and watching old movies in the basement.
- what is "weed"?topic
- its sort of like crack but healthierDodecahedron

Show the original. Watching the newer versions first ruins the overall story once you get to the originals. He will already know Darth Vader is Luke's Father ect....
- huh? Darth is Luke's father?????CanHasQBN
- he is 6 this does not matterDodecahedron
